1841 Census, Lavender Lane Rotherhithe Surrey had two resident Emmas
but they don't appear to be relevant. No marriage found for the older
one between the census and Nicholas' death:

HO107/1067 7/15 24 Schedule 1991 - Emma Wittaker, 18.
Same reference, Schedule 1993 - Emma Hainson, 14.

vv.

Thank you all for your replies they are most helpful. If Emma came from a boatbuilding family that certainly fits, I will investigate further. Nicholas married Mary Paddy Trevarthen; they were both from Cornwall and Jenking, Paddy and Trevarthen were Cornish boatbuilders. After Nicholas died Mary and the two surviving sons moved back to Cornwall. Nicholas and Mary are my 3xgreat grandparents. As you can see I have attached another piece of the cert. which I feel confirms that Emma's surname does look like it begins with an N.
Once again thank you all for your help and information, it is much appreciated.
