Thoms Directory look up pls
« on: Monday 07 January 13 15:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Just wondered if anyone could do a lookup between 1864 and 1884 for Michael Smi(y)th and his wife (Mary) Ann, in Dublin.
When their daughter was born c1863/4 they lived Ropers Rest Dublin (I think if I have the correct parents).  When this daughter married in 1880 her parents are listed as living at Riddalls Row Dublin.
Does anyone know if there are electoral rolls for this period of time for both men and women.  If so can someone pls check where they were living during this whole period or later.
Many thank
Catherine

lots of people named Smith/Smyth in Dublin, and directories would only show heads of household, so wouldn't include name of spouse. Some streets e.g. those consisting of just cottages and tenements, and those without businesses are often not detailed in directories, and I suspect details for these streets will not be included, but will check later on ...

Do you have the street number for the house at Ropers Rest or Riddles Row, or an occupation or trade for Michael - e.g. from a birth or marriage cert for his daughter ?

There's a recent thread which discusses Electoral Rolls, but early lists generally only covered freeholders with property over a certain value - see : Electoral Process in Ireland

is this your Michael & Anne ?

Baptism of Esther Smith - 8 April 1863
Parents : Michael Smith & Anne Flangan
Address : Roper's Rest (no number included)
Parish : St. Nicolas RC, Dublin City

the year before the the start of civil records and RC - so no occupation will be available

Hi Shane thanks for your reply.
Michael Smyth was a cattle dealer and stated as living on daughters marriage cert in July 1880.  Number recorded on Riddles Row is I think either 13 or 15, could also be a scribbly 10.
The parents on that birth were Michael Smith and Ann Flannagan.  I found a marriage of a Michael Smith and Mariam Hanlon on 29/6/1857 but can't find a birth of daughter Esther for that mother maiden name around 1862-4 But on Esther's marriage in 1880 the parish record states her mother as Mary-Ann Smith.  Esther named her first born daughter Mary Ann.
Electoral rolls at this time would be great for me so I'll take a look at what you posted.
Thanks
Catherine

Roper's rest was later known as Greenville Avenue.
It is/was close to Blackpitts.
