DAWE family of Tiverton
« on: Sunday 06 January 13 10:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am researching the family of Samuel Dawe who appears on the 1841 census  as a Farmer at Tiverton with his children Elizabeth b.c.1815,  Charlotte and Harriett b.abt1820 and Ann b.1826 and also a grandson Walter (son of Charlotte) born abt 1835.  I cannot find any of them after 1841.
I believe Walter came to Australia but I do not know when or how.
regards
Sharkey

"Historical Directories on line -    http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/findbykeyword.asp

History, Gazetteer and Directory of Devon 1850

CADELEIGH or Cadleigh - 4 1/2 miles S.W of Tiverton
Farmers
Dawe Samuel, Lower Coombe

The list of "Farmers" also for Cadeleigh includes a "Kemp James, Gotham". Samuel's address in 1841 is "Lower Gotham".

Possibility?

Charlotte's parents were shown as Samuel & Ann on her baptism record. A Samuel DAWE married Ann WEBBER 8 Jul 1805 Exeter St David.
An Ann DAWE (1821) and Charlotte (1818) DAWE were baptised at Cruwys Morchard. (Ages in the 1841 census were rounded down to the nearest 5 years.) Mother Ann was buried at Cruwys Morchard aged 52 17 Sep 1831. There are several death registrations for a Samuel DAWE in the Tiverton regn. district post 1841. A Charlotte DAWE married in Tiverton regn district June qtr 1842 vol 10 page 439. A Harriett DAW married in Tiverton district June qtr 1845 vol 10 page 464.

Thanks very much for this info.  I have looked at both the marriages and have four potential partners for Charlotte and Harriett but I can't locate any of them on the 1851 census.  Am I missing something?  I am hoping that a married name for Charlotte may help me to work our how her son Walter came to Australia.

Lower Topham is the census address in 1841 for Samuel and the children.  Would Cruwyz Morchard be a logical parish location for baptisms as it appears to be some 4 miles from Lower Topham.

My guess is that the family lived at Cruwys Morchard ca 1818-21. Neither Harriet nor Ann appear to have been baptised there. I couldn't locate Charlotte in 1851 either - perhaps she emigrated with Walter and her new husband before the 1851 census?

There is a death in Tiverton reg dist in June quarter 1850 for Samuel Wellington DAW that you might consider.

If the certificate indicates that it is him, the name Wellington might give you something interesting to look into if you go looking for earlier Dawes!
- edit - rats, that was a Samuel Wellington Daw born the same quarter. Ruled out!

For the possible Harried Daw marriages, I would guess that
- Henry Drew married Sarah Phillips; there is a young couple in Tiverton in 1851 with children who would fit an 1845 marriage
- Charles Duckham married Jane Hoxland; there is an older couple in Tiverton in 1851 with no children and Chas Duckham in 1841 in Tiverton is apparently unmarried in the union workhouse
- John Collins married Elizabeth Leach; the name is common but there is a couple in Tiverton in 1851 who fit

That leaves Richard Penson, whom I can't find in 1851. There is an unmarried Richard Penson born c1821 in Cruwys Morchard in 1841.

Where in Australia did your Walter go, and generally what info do you have about him there?

Hi Janey and others
Thanks to your help have identified Harriet Dawe married Richard Pi(e)nson and Charlotte Dawe married William Pope.  Both families travelled to South Australia December 1849 on board the Pakenham as free settlers.   The Pinsons had one child with them and the Popes had two, one of whom presumably was Walter Dawe.  The identity of the second child is not yet known.  The Popes had two further children. William (1855-1858) and Henry (1857-). Willliam Pope died in 1857 and Charlotte married again in 1861 Wm Herring.  Charlotte Herring died in 1903.  The Pinsons appear to have had one child Elizabeth (born at sea in 1849).  Both families remained in the Gawler area of South Australia.
Kind regards and many thanks for your help

Excellent, many steps forward! Glad to have helped a teeny bit.

PS - if you search for Pope births in Tiverton 1841-1849, my first guess would be Charlotte Pope, birth registered March quarter 1843. Possibly indicating a hasty marriage in 1842. ;) There's no death or marriage for that name in Tiverton after that and I don't see her in the 1851 census.
