Radcliffe,

I have no idea what ES in the margin means, just a guess `Evening Service`? Other than that haven`t a clue, perhaps someone else may know?

I've no idea what ES means either. But on the original (on ancestry) half the page's entries has that ES marked on it so it's probably not significant.

BUT.

you are my hero janet.

This baptism

Baptisms: 19 Sep 1865 St Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England
Ellen Colewell - Child of David Colewell & Betty
    Born: 31 Jul 1865
    Abode: Bridge Lane
    Occupation: Labourer

and this birth certificate on lancsbmd.

COALWELL    Ellen   Lancaster   Preston   BLEASDALE   LAN/33/90

(Colwell spelling variations 9 and 10! to go with - Colwell, Corwell, Calwell, Calwall, Cowell, Coldwell, Caldwell & Cauldwell ) link the families together.

So even if I've no idea where they are in 1841 or 1851. Why the igi has that marriage at crosthwaite, kendal when the GRO index has it in cockermouth or where the brother is in 1871 if he's marrying in preston in 1877 or  any other of a few random questions (more to be determined later).

This is the first breakthrough I've had with this nightmare family in quite a long time.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

ES was the initials of the person that buried him.  There is also EP for E Pedder etc.

Brilliant! I was beginning to doubt whether this was going to be the right family!

Will just throw this one into the mix, I had a `wander` down Mount Pleasant, Preston in the 1861 Census and found this family:-

James Carrigan age 23 (1838) born Ireland
Wife Betsy age 21 born Ireland
Dg Catherine 3 born Preston
Dg Margaret infant born Preston

and
Dennis Caragan boarder age 18 born Ireland
Mary Caragan boarder age 20 born Ireland

I don`t know whether it`s coincidence or whether they are connected to Mary Bleasdale nee Carragan or not but the Mount Pleasant address figures in the marriages of John Bleasdale in 1877 to Elizabeth Wearden and prior to that David Colwell/Elizabeth Bleasdale in 1865.

Checked again in the 1871 but no sign of them...hmmm!!

Part or all of Piece 4213 for Preston is missing from the 1871 census, so that may be why you can`t find them.

Mo, the way this has been going so far it wouldn`t surprise me if they are in the `missing` bit!

Thanks for the explanation of ES, that clears that one up, many thanks!

I'd say the chance of a connection is a strong possibility. Those Corrigans are on page 45 - my Colwells are on page 44.

There doesn`t seem to be anymore births after Margaret mmn Bracken in 1861 so perhaps they went back to Ireland.  :-\
