I found another post online from someone whose  mother's maiden name is Ellenbogen.  Her mother's grandfather was Max Ellenbogen from "White Russia" (Belarus).
He had a brother Abraham and another brother Alexander.
They travelled from Belarus (to escape being forced into the Russian army) to Liverpool England with the whole family. Her grandfather made it from Liverpool to the US  in the early 1900's and took his family with with him. They lived in Passaic and Clifton, N.J.

There could be a connection to your family.  It might be worth doing some more research on it.

Sorry about the lack of replies I work from 7am to whenever and have only just walked in and read all of this. Bennet, Leah, Betsy, Essie (its bessie but the original is a poor type and is mis transcribed on some websites) Israel and Leslie are definitely relatives... I have a photo of Isreal or issy as they called him...

The earlier post mentions the J Ellenbogen born in this country and ive seen that before but have always gone on the WW1 record saying they were born in Russia, (and the age and DOB being 5 or 6 years adrift) why would they put that if he wasn't?     to be fair ive never seen the one in Liverpool from 1881 which is only a year out until now.

the death records for Joe and Minnie are spot on as Ive visited the graves (well Minnies anyway Joe is in that cemetery but the official record doesn't match a plot on the ground) and they lived at the same address since at least 1918 to 1959.

Additional to the above this is part of an email i got from the guy who looks after the graveyard where Minnie and Joe are ....

"I have discovered however that both your ggf Joseph and your ggm Minnie are buried in the now disused Jewish Rice Lane cemetery in the Walton district of Liverpool. Joseph was interred on 11th Feb 1959 and Minnie on 11th May 1942 (plot ref. C31.32) and they both lived at 52 Moon Street at the time of their death."

The record for Joe is actually mispelled slightly as ellenbogeM. - feb 1959.  there is also a death record for a Joseph Ellenbogen for June 1960 in London - I presumed this one was the one in the asylum / hospital in 1891, because of the London connection
