On 13 January

In 1824 William Conquest, mentioned yesterday, was buried at St John the Evangelist, Westminster, London.

In 1773 a 3 x g.g uncle, John Crowsley, was born in Kempston, Bedfordshire, son of Edward and his second wife Mary, nee Britain.

In 1860 my great grandparents Robert Marshall and Mary Ann Baker were married at St Mary's Church, Lewisham.  According to the marriage certificate Robert was a pork butcher, although in 1871 and 1881 he is listed as a warehouseman.  By 1891 he was a printer's porter, possibly because by then my grandfather Samuel was employed as a printer's reader at a newspaper.  I was also interested to see that Mary Ann was a milliner, because that is what her granddaughter, my mother, became.

On 16 January 1818 my 2 x great grandmother, Catherine Ashwell, was baptised at All Saints Church, Kempston, Bedfordshire.  She was the daughter of Matthew and Sophia (nee Crowsley) who had been married the day before, as mentioned yesterday.  Catherine later married William Crowsley, who was related to her via her mother.

On 17 January 1917 my great grandfather, Frederic Sewell Wilson, died in West Ham, Essex.  My father remembered going to his funeral, aged only 9, and said it was an unpleasant experience, especially as it took place on a bitterly cold day.

On 20 January 1818 my great great grandparents, Gregorio Giovannelli and Mary Kingham, were married at St James Church, Clerkenwell, London.  Gregorio (or the anglicised version Gregory) was born in Tuscany, Italy.  I'd love to know when he arrived in England, but haven't been able to find out! Mary came from a family of artificial florists and the couple continued with this work at home, as did many of their children.  They lived in Albemarle Street, Clerkenwell all their lives.
