27 Jan – a very quiet day today.

Nellie Hobson was buried in Phillips Park Cemetery, Manchester in 1956 only 3 days after her death.

Hector Benson my dad’s youngest brother married Eva Willis in Manchester in 1940.  Like my dad and his other brother he died of cancer as did their mother and sadly each son also had a child who died of cancer.  My dad and Hector’s sons died of brain tumours, whilst my dad’s elder brother’s daughter died last year of bowel cancer.

On this day 28 January,

Tenant Stanton my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Heckington, Lincolnshire in 1812.  He was the 9th of 12 children of my 4 x g.grandparents born over a period of 22 years.  Not unusual, but poor  mother.  ::)

William Mutton my 4 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Thorney, Cambridge in 1739/40

Mary Benson my 1st cousin 5 times removed was baptised in Kirkby Ireleth, Lancashire in 1787

Ann Cockett my g.g.aunt died at Penny Hill, Holbeach, Lincolnshire in 1845.  She was only 6 months old and died of Mesenteric Disease.  Apparently Mesenteric Disease is TB of the lymph glands inside the abdomen caused by drinking unpasteurised milk.  This makes sense as her mother, my 2 x g.grandmother died the day Ann was born of a uterine haemorrhage and I guess her dad thought he was doing his best by giving her, possibly, fresh cows’ milk.  :'(

My 3 x Great Grandmother, Elizabeth White was born today, in 1770, in Moor Crichel, Dorset.   She married one of my John Williams, also in Moor Crichel, and their son Isaac was my 2 x Gr. grandfather who was kicked to death by a carthorse.     I haven't found out much about her except that she had a daughter, Mary Anne, as well as Isaac, but now the Dorset records are on Ancestry,  I may find more.

Also this day, Wilf (Wilfred) Quering was born in 1941.   He was the husband of my Canadian 2nd cousin J. (cant mention her as she's still alive) but Wilf sadly died in 2006.   They had married when J. was just 16, and were school sweet-hearts.   Wilf was born in Saskatchewan; I think his father (surname spelled Quiring) went to Canada from Poland.   I met and stayed with Wilf and J. and Wilf was a lovely man, with a great line in awful, groanworthy funny stories.

My 3xG grandmother, Isabella Scott, died at 3. a.m. on 28th January 1857 at 199 High Street Linlithgow. Apparently 3. a.m. was or is known as the 'Devil's Hour' as between 3. a.m and 5. a.m. is a time when many ill people die. It is said that this is because this is when the human immune system is at it's lowest ebb. I don't know if this is true but Isabella certainly went at that time. The informant was her son-in-law Robert Wood, who had married her daughter Janet 5 years previously.
She had married my 3xG grandfather John Pate or Peat in 1810. He was a shoemaker by trade as were many in Linlithgow at the time as the town produced boots for the army. At the time of marriage he was also a drummer in the Linlithgow Militia.
Her parents were John Scott, a farmer and Janet Henderson, though my cousin John in Australia, who is also descended from them, and myself think he might have been David Scott, also a farmer. The children's names bear out John and Janet, but there is also a son David and a couple named David and Janet that we believe could be her parents. It's still a work in progress. I have three Scott lines, this one and two from Fife and all are troublesome. Still I am lucky in that I know who all their children married. I am descended from their youngest daughter Elizabeth.
She is buried with her husband in St. Michael's Kirkyard in Linlithgow, just outside the gates of Linlithgow Palace. The memorial stone was erected by their eldest son George. It is the stone in the lower left hand of this photograph. I found several members of my Linlithgow families lying about this churchyard and I am sure there are many more in unmarked graves. It's something of a spiritual place for myself.

Family of my RC friend Skoosh lie close by marked by the stone to the right of mine in the photo, in the row behind.

My 3xgt. aunt, Ann Elizabeth Pain, born 1816 in Woolwich;  daughter of John and Elizabeth (still not found their marriage!). I think Ann was their first born.  She married, quite late in life, a widower, Hugh Hughes. They marry in 2 different churches on 2 separate dates......can't work that out! They had one son who is mentioned in Ann's Will as a "lunatic now in Darenth Asylum" but I have not been able to trace him.  Ann died in 1899, 26 years after Hugh, spending all her life in the Woolwich area.
