On this day in January,

Isaac Whittaker my husband’s g.g.uncle was born in Denton, Lancashire in 1835

Samuel Bailden my 6 x g.g. uncle was baptised in Almondbury Parish Church, Yorkshire in 1670/71

William Sharp my 1st cousin 4 times removed was baptised in St Botolph’s Church, Boston, Lincs in 1829

Cecilie Dameron my 9 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Westerfield, Suffolk in 1558.  When her father died in 1596/7, it was stated that he only had one daughter, so as my 9 x g.grandmother was obviously alive, it would appear that Cecilie died sometime before 1596/7.  There was also a brother who was born and died in 1561 aged about 1 week.  I’ve tried, with the help of Rootschatters to find what happened to Cecilie but without success.

Fanny Hobson (nee Smith) wife of my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Almondbury Parish Church, Yorkshire in 1770

Thomas Postlethwaite my 4 x g.grandfather died in old Park, Dalton in Furness, Lancs in 1841.  The probate to his will stated “the whole of the lands, chattels, hereditaments which the said testator Thomas Postlethwaite died possessed within the Archdeaconary of Richmond in the diocese of Chester ... were under three hundred pounds” which is interesting as he left lots of bequests to his wife and children which totalled far more than £300.

Benjamin Collett my 2 x g.g.uncle was buried in St Peter & St Paul, Fressingfield, Suffolk in 1862.  He was 59 and the father of 8 children, by two wives (not at the same time!).

Thomas Benson and Janet Wilkinson my 7 x g.grandparents married in Holme Cultram in 1693/94.  He was born in 1666 and took his mother’s surname, although there is a man listed on the baptismal record as “alleged father”.

William HALL was born in 1830 in Birmingham he became a glass cutter married a NEEDLE (Sarah) Had 6 daughters and two sons and became my great great grand father. His dad was from Shropshire and drove his cow ( yes just one cow) to the city where he set up as a milk man Neither of his sons continued selling milk

On January 22nd 1902 my GG grandmother Hannah Greer's sixth child and third daughter died aged 6 months. On the death certificate she is named as Mary Skelton Greer or McEwan and I don't think she was the child of her husband, my GG grandfather Robert McEwan. I know on the 1911 census she is named as the daughter of her second husband. On the death certificate, Hannah is named as the mother but after that it says, husband of Robert McEwan and doesn't name him as the father.
Likewise the previous child Agnes, who was born in New Monkland poorhouse, I think was not Robert's daughter. He had gone to America in 1894 and though he seems to have come and gone several times, on his son Alexander's military records, Agnes unlike her siblings is not enumerated as a full sister.
Hannah would remarry in 1903 declaring herself a spinster. Robert remarried in the same year declaring himself a widower despite the fact his first wife was very much alive and would be for another twenty years producing three more children with her second husband. Robert emigrated for good in 1911 and died in the USA in 1941.

I wonder how they feel about their GG grandson opening the cupboard and revealing all these skeletons.

22nd January 1758 my 4-greats grandparents William Evans and Phoebe Male married in Kingswinford. I have no information on Phoebe's family; the Evans were already involved in coal and iron in the Broseley area, and the son of this marriage, John Evans, moved to South Wales to set up an iron works in Ebbw Vale.

My great-grandparents William Parish Barrett and Mary Hannah Garnsey Meade were married on 22nd January 1861 in North Curry, Somerset. William had qualified as a veterinary surgeon and served with the East India Company army, but by this time had returned to England permanently. I don't know how he made his money, but there is no evidence that he ever worked as a vet after his return - that is from 1857 to 1894 when he died

I wonder how they feel about their GG grandson opening the cupboard and revealing all these skeletons.

Some interesting stories on here.  I wonder if our ancestors were as worried about "skeletons in the cupboard" as much as we think they were.  At least until the early 1920s, I think everyone knew what was going on and didn't worry too much about it.  It was later on in the 20th century that everyone got so uptight about illegitimate children, divorce etc. now, thankfully, the tide has turned - although some people would say it has gone too far.

My great x 3 grandfather Edward Jackson died on this day in  at 78 Black Road Macclesfield according to his death certificate. I believe this should be Windmill Road. His House/shop was on the corner.

Edward started off as a miner, then became a provision dealer.
I have spent a considerable time tracing his ancestry
Censuses give different information, birthplace in Manchester or Macclesfield, in 1851 he is called Oswald, and birthdates between 1805-1809 ignoring 1871 which has 1815.

A further clue was naming of Ellen Swindells as sister in law in his will.
Ellen was previously married to James Jackson and gave Oliver has her maiden name when she remarried Samuel Swindells.
Her birthplaces and dates vary wildly. It seems likely she was born in Brandside on the Staffs/Derby border. I have also considered that James could have had two wives called Ellen, and remarried another Ellen between censuses.
I have one possible birth for Edward in Manchester, one I have discounted for James in Macclesfield.

Anyway Edward was only described as a miner while still in that area, but three generations of Jacksons after him were mine managers, though my grandfather had to give up mining after being in a pit fall.

My 2xgt. grandmother, Isabella Bailey, born in 1816 in London, possibly in the Old Street area;  daughter of James and Hamutal (nee Page).  She married Francis Barham in 1836 in Southwark. They moved back over the river to the Shoreditch area,  had 11 children and Isabella died in 1899, sixteen years after Francis.
