Richard Whittaker my husband’s 2 x g.grandfather was born in Romiley, Stockport in 1812.  He was a hatter like all my husband’s ancestors, male and a few female, until his father broke the mould and decided to become a greengrocer then builder!   

Uncle Tom my uncle born in 1900.  Info about this man on 11 January, so no surname given.

Edward Dawson my husband’s g.g.uncle was baptised in Pilkington, Lancashire in 1842.

Samuel Woodward my 1st cousin 4 times removed was baptised in Frodsham, Cheshire in 1815.  He was the eldest of 9 children of my 3 x g.g.uncle.

Thomas Lenton Gilchrist another 1st cousin 4 times removed died in Boston, Lincs in 1842.  He was the 3rd of 8 children.

Elizabeth Foulkes (nee Pemberton) my 1st cousin twice removed died in 1969

Agnes Heesom (nee Pemberton) my 2nd cousin once removed died in Warrington, Lancs in 1970

Clement Tubbs my 4 x g.grandfather died in Holbeach in 1826

I've got two for today !    First one ..... Henry Vincent Trowbridge, born 1805, north Dorset.    His father Ambrose was my 3 x great grandfather, (so Henry Vincent must be my .... second great grand uncle    according to my relationship calculator !)    Ambrose is one of the (now) FIVE Ambrose Trowbridges I'm trying to sort out, as they must all be linked somewhere, with a name like that ! 

Henry Vincent was the first born son of Ambrose and Elizabeth (Bettey) Vincent, and Bettey is the link to my problem Foyles and Fripps .... I'm working on them ....

Henrys youngest brother Samuel was married to Mary Anne Sturney, and together they really got my FH on a firm footing !!



I'll find the other one that belongs to today in a minute ........ )

.... and here's the other one for today; Joseph Foyle, born this day, 1775, Witchampton, Dorset.   He was the first husband of Elizabeth (Bettey) Vincent mentioned in previous post !    HIS second wife was Ann or Hannah Friggle or Triggle ....


.... isn't FH complicated and intriguing and FRUSTRATING !!

Today was the burial (death date unknown) of Jane Goodgame nee Oatey in 1745 in Ramsey, Hunts.

She had married three times
1 William Lambert marr 1700 in Stanground
2 John Cole at unknown date 1721-1728
3 John Goodgame 1730 in St Ives

Jane was my 7X grt grandmother

Caroline Whateley Kellock nee Holmes was buried on this day in 1956 in Green-wood Cemetery New York

She was born in 1872 to Frederick Walter Holmes born in England and Elizabeth nee Kerr, a Scot

She married Samuel Keppel Kellock, a lawyer, in 1903.
He had his fingers in a number of pies and was an associate of Charles Hyde and of Mayor Gaynor who was Mayor of New York in 1910 but died a couple of years later. Samuel was indicted for corruption, but as far as I can see, came to England briefly, and never apparently faced justice. According to the family story the marriage was dissolved. Samuel remarried in Utah, but Caroline never remarried.

Caroline was my paternal grandmother's cousin

5g Uncle Philip Hastie chr 16/1/1787 Innerwick, East Lothian, son of William & Elizabeth Hastie nee Galbraith. Philip and his wife Jant Mann had 7 children. 1 died young, 1 moved to Yorkshire, 4 emigrated to the US and only the 1 remained in Scotland. I have a copy of Philips very informative will which was surprising long and gave much info on his children.

On this day 16th January 1853 my 3xG grandparents Benjamin Smith and Sarah Cudworth married in St. Peter's parish church in Leeds, which was then in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Both father's were named William. Benjamin's was a woodsman and Sarah's a cordwainer. Their mothers were Hannah and Elizabeth, all three names Hannah, Elizabeth and William are still in use in my family to this day as indeed is my own, George, which has been used by one line of my Scottish ancestors in every generation from at least the late 1600s right down to myself.

Today is also my mother's birthday. She is the youngest of eight children the others being, Agnes, Thomas, Elizabeth, Rachel, George, James and Grace. All are traditional family names and all were born in the same small Scottish village as I myself was born, indeed some in the same house.

On the same day as my 3xG grandparents Benjamin and Sarah were tying the knot, Andre Michelin was born in Paris. With his brother Edouard he would later form the Michelin Tyre Company.

On this day 16th January,
Susannah Dye (nee Barnes) my 2 x g.g.aunt was born in Newton Flotman, Norfolk in 1825 and 
Nancy Dawson my husband’s 2 x g.g.aunt was born in Whitfield, Prestwich, Lancs in 1814

Mary Hobson my 5 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1703/4.  As she was born in April 1703 her record looks really odd as it appears she was baptised before she was born when in fact it’s because the years ran April to March at the time, rather than Jan to December, hence the double dates given for many of my ancestors. 

John Lightfoot my 6 x g.g.uncle died in Holme Cultram, Cumberland on this day in 1707/08.  This is another instance of strange dates as he was baptised in April 1707 so it appears he died before he was born/baptised, whereas he was actually 8 months’ old when he died.

My 4-greats grandfather Robert Vazie, gentleman of Hexham in Northumberland, died 16th January 1804 in Hexham.
The Vazies are frustrating as they seem to appear from nowhere in Hexham in the 18th century and the name is now extinct in the UK as far as I can tell. There was a line of Vazies in Wiltshire and in Gloucestershire, also extinct.
I've found Vazies in Alston in Cumberland in the 17th and 18th century but have not linked them to the Hexham line.

My 3-greats grandfather Peter Langdale married my 3-greats grandmother Isabella Mountcure (or other spellings) at St James, Westminster on 16th January 1774. Peter was a coal merchant, with at one time an address just round the corner from the modern-day Society of Genealogists, and didn't do all that well. He was imprisoned for debt at least twice, 1790 and 1801; family legend suggests that he lost substantial amounts of money in gambling. My great-aunts I remember warned my mother to keep an eye on me as it might run in the family.
They had at least 9 children, with some dying young: three were named Isabella, but only one survived; there was also a Rebecca who died young before my 2-greats grandmother Mary Rebecca Langdale was born.
