I also thought that we should mention any really important days in history so that we can see what was going on on the days our ancestors were born, married or died. Adds a little extra colour, don't you think?

Excellent idea gengen, I will try to do that on future posts.

Hi everyone, I'll start from the 12th - I think this is a great idea!

12 January
1866: Helena Brouwer died aged 85 in Haarlem. She was born in Leiden around 1780, the daughter of a vintage clothing merchant, and his weaver wife. Her parents separated, and her father remarried to a much younger half-German. Helena was married and had seven children in Haarlem, where she worked as a shopkeeper in her widowhood, which began in 1822.

1840: Johanna van den Eijkhof, my ancestor and the granddaughter of the above, was born in Haarlem. She was a housewife her whole life, raising four surviving children (including Anna who died aged 15), and losing several in infancy.  She died on 19 November 1899 aged 59, and her husband placed an obituary in the paper which described her as a much loved mother and grandmother.

13 January
1803: Teunisje Elberts van Donkersgoed, my ancestor, was born in Putten. Her parents were farmers in the area. Teunisje married and had 14 children, but not all survived. Those that did became farmers as well, or married farmers. Teunisje was widowed in 1861, and died on 3 July 1862 aged 59, 3 years after her mother.

1850: Catharina Willemina Fiets, my ancestor, died in Welsum aged 76. She was born in Diepenveen, and lived in Welsum in her adult life. She was married to Evert van Putten, and they were both labourers. They had 7 children and were married for almost 54 years, until Catharina's death.

12, 13 and 14 January, including some events that were happening at the time.

12 January 2013

Annie Elizabeth Hawkins (nee Whittaker) my husband’s aunt was born in Denton, Lancs in 1904

Ann Clarke (nee Spraggett)  my husband’s 3 x g.grandmother was privately baptised in Leamington Hastings, Warwickshire on this day in 1800, however she was received into the congregation on 23 January 1800.  I wonder if she was a sickly baby as her 10 siblings were all baptised normally in church. (1799 to 1800 Trade Unions were outlawed).

Mary Smith my 7 x g.g.aunt was baptised in  Dalton in Furness, Lancashire in 1683/84 (Charles II was on the throne)

Mary Day my 3 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Osbournby, Lincolnshire in 1783 (Britain began to evacuate loyalists from American colonies).

Samuel Mutton my 4 x g.grandfather was buried in Holbeach, Lincolnshire in 1809 (2 years after Britain abolished slave trade)

13 Jan
Simeon Mumby my 2 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Boston, Lincs in 1822 (Two years after George III died and was succeeded by George IV, and 3 years earlier 11 died at the Peterloo massacre in Manchester).

James Cawthorn my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Pinchbeck, Lincs in 1799 (1799 to 1800 Trade Unions were outlawed and in 1801 the Act of Union created the United Kingdom).  He died in 1801 a couple of months before his 2nd birthday.

Arter Peat my 7 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Holme Cultram, Cumberland in 1677/78 (In 1677 Mary Stuart married William of Orange and in 1678 ‘Popish Plot’ to murder Charles II was revealed).

Rebecca Gilchrist my 2 x g.g.aunt died in Boston, Lincs in 1834.  She was just 2 years old. (In 1834 New Poor Law reformed Britain’s social security system)

Anne Collett my 6 x g.grandmother was buried in Eye, Suffolk in 1739/40.  She married aged 18 and had at least 12 children, 9 boys and 3 girls before her husband died when she was only 46, yet she still lived to be 65. How she managed to look after 12 children as a widow I have no idea. (Methodist preachers began their mission to the poor).

14 Jan
Bridget Hobson my 2 x g.g.aunt was born in Denby Dale, Yorks in 1809.  She was the 6th child out of 12 and 3rd daughter of my 3 x g.grandfather.  He was a salter.

Lawrence Dameron my 11th g.g.uncle was buried in Westerfield, Suffolk in 1559.  He was the 3rd son of my 12 x g.grandfather who was Lord of Westerfield Manor.  I’m sure there must have been more children, but I haven’t found any others, although I must say I haven’t looked very hard for others. (On 17 November 1558 Mary died and Elizabeth 1 acceded to the throne, on 24 June 1559 Book of Common Prayer became the only legal form of worship).

More up to date happenings on 14 January.

1943 - Churchill and Roosevelt were in Casablanca to draw up a blueprint for the defeat of the Axis powers.

1962 - France vetoed Britain joining the European Common Market, believing the UK would act for US interests.  ???

Oh dear !     I MUST get my files sorted out !    I've missed this for 16th DECEMBER:-

TO be SOLD by AUCTION, by M. BAKER, at the Swan Inn, in Sturminster Newton, on Wednesday the 16th of December, 1812, precisely at three o'clock in the afternoon, all that Dwelling-House or Tenement, Garden, and excellent Orchard, containing about two acres, situate at a place called Nobcrook, late in the possession of John Trowbridge, and now in hand; with immediate possession.

This is a tenuous one for me, as I think John Trowbridge was a brother or cousin of my great grandmother, Mary Trowbridge .... but so many Mary's, so many John's ....

Its the word 'precisely' that I like !

(And Knobcrook is near Wimborne Minster)

In this day Archibald Douglas was born in Egham in 1844  to James Douglas watchmaker and Martha Ann nee Boyce

Archibald was a baker in 1874 when in Egham he advertised for a Housekeeper in Christian World

He took on a woman named Annie Cheetham (the name may be a clue)
She said that she was to inherit some money and claims he wanted to marry her.
She got lots of goods on the promise of future payment
This was not the first nor the last time she had done this, she was also known as Annie Hastings or Snell or Julia Snell.
She was convicted in 1874. I have no proof , but, I suspect Archibald may have inherited his uncles and aunts business, I think he may have felt it his duty to reimburse the Egham tradesment defrauded - however he never had his own business again, in 1898 he wrote to my gt grandfather that he was at his wits end to get a job so that he could pay the rent.

He however lived until 1924 and was remembered by and pictured with my late Aunt Cicely who remembered him though he died when she was around 6
