Wife of yesterdays entry Fanny Elizabeth Towler nee Turner born 1887 somewhere in Spain.
Her father was from Yorkshire and went to Spain with his family (to work). At that time he had 5 children, when he came back he had 6. In total he had 15 children and two wives.
Fanny remarried not long after Robert's death, probably because she had 3 children to bring up. Her new husband was only 14 years older than her eldest child. Top marks to him for taking on the family, I'm told he was a superb step-father.

On this day in 1887, Samuel Greer McEwan the eldest son and first child of my GG grandparents, Robert McEwan and Hannah Greer was born at Longriggend. As Lance Corporal Samuel. G. McEwan of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders he would die in 1914 during the retreat from Mons in WWI only weeks after having been sent to the front. He is remembered at Le Cateau Communal Cemetery and on various war memorials in Scotland as well as in the book of remembrance in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders museum in Stirling Castle. He left behind his wife Agnes Shearer who he had married the year previously. She was pregnant with their first child. The child was named Samuel Mons McEwan but lived for only 3 weeks.

On January 12 1856, James the son of my GG grandparents, James Stein and Elizabeth Pate was born in Linlithgow. He was the first of three sons they would have named James. He died aged only 20 days and is buried alongside several of my Steen, Pate and Auld ancestors in St. Michaels Kirkyard which is just outside the gatehouse of Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots.

On this day 13th January 1874 Vincent McBride, the second child and second son of my GG grandparents James McBride and Mary Ann Clifford was born in Russell Row, Bathgate. He would be the first of two children they had named Vincent and I have yet to find out where his name comes from.

On this day in 1875 my GG grandfather's only brother Henry Steen was being treated for bronchitis in Peshawar, India, now in Pakistan. Peshawar is at the eastern end of the Khyber Pass near the border with Afghanistan, where he would serve a few years later in the 2nd Afghan War. He was a soldier in the 72nd Regiment of Foot, The Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders. Unlike other Scottish regiments who wore the kilt, the 72nd wore trews of Royal Stewart tartan.  A few years later while he was still serving the would be amalgamated with the 78th Highlanders to form the Seaforth Highlanders.

Xinia,

My orginal thought was that we'd do this for twelve months and that then we'd all be repeating ourselves. But if new people join in, we get lots of different entries and also, since starting the original thread in November, I have added more dates to members of my family so am waiting for their turn to come around again.

I also thought that we should mention any really important days in history so that we can see what was going on on the days our ancestors were born, married or died. Adds a little extra colour, don't you think?

John Pierce Boyce was born on this day in 1803 in Colnbrook Bucks
All his later siblings were born in Egham where his father set up a bakery.

John started a chemist's shop in Egham in 1824, by 1833 he opened a shop in Chertsey - seemed at some point the Egham shop closed.

He advertised his own concoction named Boyce's Infallible Remedy
Seems advertising standards did not exist in those days
