On this day in 1917 a memorandum from the War Office was sent to the officer in charge of infantry records in Perth, Scotland informing them that the effects and personal belongings of the late Private Alexander McEwan of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders should be sent to his sister,my great grandmother. He had been killed in action in October 1914 aged 23.His elder brother Samuel was killed two months previously during the retreat from Mons and third brother John was missing in action.

I missed yesterday!

9th January 1792, Hannah Cant was baptised in Southminster, Essex, daughter of James Cant and Hannah Duck. She was my 4 x great grandmother, who complicated my research by marrying George Cant, presumably a cousin of some sort. Unfortunately, I haven't found anything about his parents so just how George and Hannah were related prior to their marriage remains a mystery at the moment. If what I have found is correct, Hannah gave birth to at least thirteen children, poor woman.

9th January 1891, Elsie Hardie Raitt was born in Peterculter, Aberdeenshire. A first cousin 3 x removed, daughter of Alexander Raitt and Isabella Hardie.

I have nothing for today. :)

My gt. aunt Tilly, Matilda Barham, was born in 1875 in Holborn, London;  daughter of George William and Elizabeth Mary Ann  (nee Burgess).  Matilda married in 1894, had four children and almost reached her century, dying in 1974 just a few months short of her birthday. On 1901 census she is mis-transcribed as "Moubilou".   ::)
