Today in 1817, William Raitt was baptised in Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire. A 4 x great uncle, of whom I know little. He was married to Jane Duncan and had offspring Charles ( 1857) and Jane (1859).

Quite a few today.

Roger Postlethwaite and Mary Elizabeth James my 5 x g.grandparents married in Kirby Ireleth, Lancashire in 1754.  I have only found 4 children for them which doesn't seem many for the time.

Charles Collett my 2 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Fressingfield, Suffolk in 1799

Thomas Tubbs my 3 x g.grandfather, and brother of Robert Tubbs below, was baptised in Haddenham, Cambs in 1791, although he was born in 1789.  He also died on this day but in 1852 in Holbeach Marsh, Lincs.  He had 13 children with 3 different women (I suppose he could have had more but I've not bothered to research any more).  His first child – that I know of – was my 2 x g.grandfather and he was illegitimate, Thomas never marrying his mother, my 3 x g.grandmother.

Robert Tubbs my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Haddenham, Cambs in 1791

Elizabeth Baxter my 5 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Heckington, Lincs in 1746/47

Elizabeth Chapman my 4 x g.g.aunt and her twin sister Ann Chapman were baptised in Pinchbeck, Lincs in 1768

William Postlethwaite my 4 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Pennington in Furness, Lancashire in 1765

Sarah Chorley my 2 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Gosforth, Cumberland in 1828.  She was the 2nd of 3 illegitimate children that my 3 x g.grandmother had before she married my 3 x g.grandfather.  Sarah only lived until she was 5.

Maboth Bayldon my 4 x g.grandmother died in Lockwood, Almondsbury, Yorks in 1812.  Interestingly, she appeared to have signed the parish register at the time of her marriage, but only signed her will with a X I wonder if the lawyer didn't think she could write and just said "Put your mark there", so she did.

Seth Hobson my g.grandfather died in Manchester in 1892.  He was the g.grandson of Mabeth Bayldon above.  Although his death certificate gives his cause of death as Pneumonia, my mother (and interestingly some 4th cousins I was in touch with a couple of years ago) said that they'd been told he had fallen off his horse and cart coming back from market, under the influence of drink!  He was a butcher.

Blanch Badams my husband’s 4 x g.grandmother was buried in Warwick, 4 days after her death in 1840.  She was 76 when she died and the cause of her death was just given as Old Age.

Margaret Postlethwaite my 3 x g.g.aunt aged 10 when she died, was buried in Dalton in Furness, Lancs in 1800

Deborah Wane my 5 x g.g.aunt was buried in Aldingham Lancs in 1815 aged 88.  Her father was only 43 when he died, he had been a mariner, but Deborah must have taken after her mother who was 82 when she died in 1780.

A first cousin, twice removed, Florence Beatrice Rainer, born 1898 in Toronto, Canada; illegitimate daughter of Florence Beatrice Rainer. 1901 census shows her back in England with her mother, now both with the surname Lumsden. There's a possible sighting of her later in a Canadian orphanage but she died, as Beatrice Grace Rainer, in Vancouver in 1921;  her mother having married in 1911 in Winnipeg and moved to Vancouver.

Arthur Hobson my g.g.uncle was born in Ingbirchworth, Yorks in 1856.  He was an apprentice joiner whilst living with his sister and her husband who was a butcher/joiner – which means he was really a joiner but had married into a butcher’s family!  Arthur worked as a joiner most of his life, but in the 1890s decided he, too, would follow the family business.  Obviously he didn’t enjoy it because he reverted to being a joiner.

George Frederick Cockett my g.uncle was born in 1879 in Manchester.  He died in 1883, aged 4 from Measles.

William Brand  my 2 x g.g.uncle was bapt in  Sleaford, Lincs in 1814.  He was named after another brother who was born and died in 1812 aged about 2 days.  Unfortunately, the 2nd William died in 1824 aged 10.

Elizabeth Daintry my 8 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Haddenham, Cambs in 1637/8

Joseph Gaunt my 3 x g.g.uncle died in Denby Dale, Yorks in 1850.  He was a farmer and was almost 90 when he died.

Jane Sharp my g.g.aunt died in Kingsley, Cheshire in 1915

John Dameron my 10 x g.g.grandfather died in Westerfield, Suffolk in 1596/97.  He was Lord of the Manor of Westerfield.  The manor house which had been left in trust to his wife was bequeathed to his grandson, the eldest son of his daughter Joan (known as Johanna) and her husband John Collett.  Of course, I’m descended from the 6th child and 3rd son!

Jonathan Bagshaw my 7 x g.grandfather was buried in Bradfield, Yorkshire in 1721/22.  I don’t know anything about him, apart from the fact that he fathered my 6 x g.g.grandfather Benjamin Bagshaw.  I did visit Bradfield a couple of years ago, to see if I could find a gravestone, but although there are many gravestones in the church, most of them are illegible.  I spoke to the friendly people in the pub, where we had a great lunch, but all they could tell me was that in past centuries, nearly everyone in the village was a Bagshaw or related to a Bagshaw.

Jonathan Middleton my 3 x g.grandfather was buried in Millom, Cumberland in 1877 aged 76.  He had been an agricultural labourer throughout his adult life, yet his death certificate states he was a fisherman.  I queried this on the Cumberland board and was told that near where he lived there were good fishing places and many retired men took up fishing and made a living from it, so I guess this is what must have happened with my 3 x g.grandfather.

Thomas Henry Cockett my grandfather was buried in Higher Blackley, Manchester in 1922, he was 44.  As my mum was only 10 when he died, obviously, I never knew him.  I’ve got a couple of photos of him and he looks very severe compared with 44 year old men today.

Thomas Boulton Benson my 1st  cousin 3 times removed was buried in Dalton in Furness, Lancs in 1852, he was just over a year old when he died.  Strangely he was the 1st cousin of my g.grandfather on his father’s side and also the 4th cousin of my g.grandfather on his mother’s side.

On this day January 8th in 1784 was born in the town of Bo'ness my great great great great great grandfather, Walter Gibb. He would grow up to marry Margaret Sneddon. His father was of course a Gibb, but his mother was also a Sneddon. For their daughter my 4XG grandmother, they played safe and named her Janet Sneddon Gibb. Talk about keeping it in the family  :o ;D

My 3xgt aunt, Mary Jane Pain was born in Woolwich in 1857;  daughter of Charles George and Mary Jane (nee Ottley). One one census Mary is shown as "deaf from childhood";  she never married and died in 1941 in Beaminster. She appears on Electoral Rolls in the Woolwich area until late 1930s so possibly moved away when the bombing in WW2 started.

January 8th 1867, Jane Raitt was born in Monymusk, Aberdeenshire. Daughter of George Raitt and Elizabeth Watt, she was my great-grandfather's cousin. I think her father helped my ggf to get started in life, by finding him a carpentry apprenticeship in the village. He went on to be a master craftsman with a fairly middle-class lifestyle, owning his own house ( which he built and which I wave to every time I drive past it). Not bad for the illegitimate son of a woman who spent her life looking after other people.
