It's still January, but the year has changed from 2013 to 2014.

For starters, there are 41 anniverseries already in the database, so check to see if you have already entered them there, or on this topic (tip: click on"Print" and then search the whole topic on one page)

Regards,
Bob

On 1 January 1723 my 6 x great grandmother, Susannah Bettle (nee Goss), died in Cardington, Bedfordshire.

On 1 January 1854, my great grandfather William Conquest was baptised, aged 13, at St Mary's Church, Bedford.  Four of his younger siblings, Harriet, Henry, James and John, were baptised at the same time.  The youngest, John, was aged 4 and died in 1855 so I am guessing that he was a sickly child and that this was the reason for the five baptisms.

On 2 January

In 1824 a first cousin 3x removed, William Conquest, was born in Westminster, London, the first son of William and Ann (nee Brampton).  Sadly he only lived for ten days.

In 1853 my great great uncle William John Elliott was baptised at St Mary Islington.  He was the second son of George and Elizabeth (nee Mitchell).

In 1938 my grandmother Louise Maude Mary Marshall (nee Conquest) died in Leyton, Essex, aged 65.
Unfortunately I never knew her, but it was her maiden name which got me interested in family history.  I was expecting it to be easy, with what I thought of as an uncommon name - how wrong I was!

On 3 January 1893 my great aunt Ellen Elizabeth Marshall died in Fife, Scotland.  Two of her children, Ellen, aged 3, and baby Edmund Charles sadly also died the same day.  Her husband Edmund Charles Beton Webb was working as a coastguard in 1891, but I haven't yet found him or their surviving daughter Susan Mary Annie Webb in 1901.

Hi Quest40

Can I suggest that perhaps you are looking for the wrong name. Serving in the Coastguard at this date would mean he would have a Naval Service Record. Having done a search for Edmund I could find no matches, however, I did find an Edwin Charles B Webb who seemed a likely candidate.

According to the 1881 Census an Edwin Charles Beton Webb was serving on HMS Monarch in Malta, and on the WW1 medal roll he was a Leading Boatman (meaning a CG), awarded the British War Medal. If my hunch is right you could risk the £3.36 to download his service record. This should provide details of the CG Stations he worked at, although unfortunately no family information, but may provides clues as to where to look for further information.

Hi Martin,

What very interesting information, thanks.  I shall look into it a bit more, but as Edmund/Edwin is not in my direct line I won't spend any money!  After posting yesterday I looked again for Susan in 1901 and found her, so it's certainly worth revisiting one's research.  That's where I find this thread very useful.

Thanks again, Ann
