Memorial Inscription in Brighton, Sussex (1895)
« on: Monday 31 December 12 13:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

One of my ancestors, Emily Sarah Lloyd died on 7 March, 1895 in Brighton, Sussex (birth date unknown, but around 1808). I was wondering whether anyone who has access to memorial inscriptions to this area might be kind enough to verify if she was buried in Brighton.

Thanks for taking the time to read.
Karina

I presume you have the death reg. from FreeBMD, Katrina?  It states she was 86 so born about 1808/9.
Probate: says she was of 30 Westbourne Terrace, Hyde Park, Middlesex & died at Belmont Pavilion Parade, Brighton.
Sorry, I know it's not what you're after but it might help,

Jane

Hi Jane,

Thanks for your post & thanks for taking the time to share the information.

Yes, I do have this information but I'm afraid that that's where my info ends (I have info on a dispute on her will after her death, so I know that the death date is for my ancestor). But that's where I'm stuck.

All the best,
Karina

Hi Katrina,
You might like to try  http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/index.cfm?request=c1001142
There are 5 possible cemeteries she might have been buried in.  Start with the nearest to Pavilion Parade.  You'll probably have to pay for a look-up  :(

Meanwhile, I found this in the online newspapers.  The Standard, Monday 11/3/1895.
"7/3/1895 - Emily S. Lloyd, widow of the Late Captain Rickard Lloyd RN in her 86th (print is not very clear could be 88th)year.  Friends will please accept this (the only) intimation.  Australian papers please copy"

I would try the Brighton area first for her burial, much easier than her London address  ;)
You could also try the Sussex Family History Group (Google & you'll find it) they have a burial index.

Hi Jane,

Excellent! Thanks so much for the newspaper information. I have been looking for something like that, but had not found it. Would you mind telling me which site you used to find it?

Thanks for the other information, I'll start looking into that.
Thanks for taking the time.
All the best,
Karina

Katrina, it's from the Gale newspaper online site.  It can be accessed with a UK library card.  Not much good to you as you're in Oz  :(
