Did it show an occupation on marriage? Perhaps that may give a clue as to whether he had learnt a trade or not.

Were they divorced? Perhaps the divorce papers may help?

If his marriage ended, perhaps that is what made him then join the army?

I think perhaps local newspapers may be your best hope of finding any snippets of information on him.

He was a Hawker and she was a fishworker-I think that she died eventually as he did not remarry till around 1942 to somebody that he had lived with from about 1927.

So - if he did have a military education it doesn't look like he got a trade out of it by 1919.  Although he may just have been doing hawking having been recently demobbed from WW1 (if he was in it). It is impossible to say.

Hi Milly,
True-and I think that he was under age when he joined up, and could he have been in the band as he was a telented musician and he had a flair for cooking too.  There are so many possibilities.

If you have the time and patience to trawl through the WW1 records opening each one which looks likely then you may be in luck...you never know! I have found people like that before but it does take a while.

Good luck!

Thanks Milly, He had a bullet mark where he was shot in his knee and a fingernail that had also been grazed by a bullet, so I am wondering if he was in a Military Hospital for a little while, before his demob.

That is useful - another thing for you to cross check against any records you open. If any medical pages are included they may mention a GSW (Gun Shot Wound) to the knee.  Or - of course - there may not be any medical pages and they may not mention it.

Or - he may have received injuries from some later service somewhere else.
