Cunningham/Whitty
« on: Saturday 29 December 12 18:44 GMT (UK) »
looking for information on the Marriage of Marten Cunningham and Catherine Whitty, their marriage is listed on their Daughters birth certificate from the scottish records as occuring Sept 1861 possibly the 11th in New Ross Ireland.  Not sure if they were Protestant or Catholic but I suspect that they were Catholic as subsequent generations have been brought up catholic.

Catherine Whitty was born abt. 1827 in ireland according to scottish census records
Martin Cunningham was born abt 1832 in ireland according to scottish census records.

Would like to know if they had any children born in Ireland between their marriage in 1861 and the birth of Bridget in Scotland in 1864.

Unfortunately civil registration of births in Ireland only started in 1864 so for earlier dates you'd need to locate church records.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

If the marriage was Catholic then you would need to check for parish records, as full civil registration didn't start until 1864.

I dont see any sign of a Catherine Whitty marriage around the right time on the BMD index so suspect this was an RC marriage.

Transcripts for a small number of Co. Wexford parishes are included on the pay-website of RootsIreland, but none for any of the New Ross parishes have been added yet.

see : Introduction to Irish Records

Do you have the names of parents for Marten and Catherine from their death certs ?

a bit later than the date you mentioned - just just spotted two Catherine Whitty marriages in New Ross district. One in 1864 the other in 1865....

just to confirm that neither of those Catherine Whitty marriages I mentioned cross match to anyone with the surname Cunningham.

Whitty is a real Wexford surname, Cunningham is not - more prevalent in the west and north of Ireland.
