Sarah Park 1811-1842 (a guess) m. John Wilson 1810-1887
« on: Friday 28 December 12 16:44 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the parents of Sarah Park estimated to be born in 1811. She married John Wilson (1810-1886) in Ochiltree.  I have been unable to obtain/find a marriage bann.  She died young around 1841 with the birth of her son John Park Wilson.  I tried finding out previously in http://tinyurl.com/c8hyx4p but have had no luck since.

I appreciate your help

Scott

Are you sure John Park was the son of John and Sarah? I get the 2 boys that were left to be Quinten and George.

In later census records there is a John Park born New Cumnock around 1841 son of John Park. If you look at the Parks living at New Cumnock in 1841 at Freecen you'll see John senior with 3 children and no wife. Is it possible that John and Sarah were caring for wee John because his mother had died?

There is also a George Park and his wife Jane a couple of households along from the Wilsons who I think would be worth investigating as the parents of Sarah.

That is very possible.   I have a Quintin, but no George.  The children that I have are:
Jean Wilson 19 Feb 1833  m. Adam McCrone
Elizabeth 1836
Quintin b. 01 May 1838
Agnes 1841
John Park 1841

will have to look for the death record of John Park Wilson - it certainly possible that he was adopted.

How did you find the other households?

OK - I found the census that indicates John Wilson, wife Sarah, with Jane, Elizabeth and Agnes.  I don't see the sons Quintin or George.  Certainly is possible that they adopted him.

Here is an except from my GGM MacKenzie's letter that she wrote my grandmother regarding the family:

"On the other hand, I knew Grandfather Wilson for many years before he died at the age of 77 years. He stayed with us from time to time. He had 3 fingers missing on the right hand- some accident early in life. He was twice married.  His first wife my Mothers Mother {Jane/Jean Wilson b 1833}, was Sarah Park of New Cumnock. She died early when mother was 8 years old, & left 2 boys & two girls. Mother was the oldest. He married Elizabeth Beattie some time later & had a large family of 3 sons & 3 daughters, who all grew up to manhood & womanhood . They were all very broad shouldered strong men & mostly worked in the blast furnace, except uncle Andrew who preferred the army & to be over 80. Served for years in India- some of the family born there. His wife is still living in Kilmarnock. He was a Sgt Major & served a long time in the Orkney Islands. Used to write me regular. Was a great lyric & sent me lots of poems-I used to  quite a bit on my own  we were young once too. They were also musical & Grandfather & Uncle Quentin were preceptors in church in the old days when there were no organs. Uncle Quentin was mothers full brother Nearly all of them worked in Wishaw. Strange as it may seem , near where Dad’s mother lived & my uncle Q lived in the same house later-- tho I did not know that then. Dad & I visited him there just before we were married."

This would put the death of Sarah Park around 1841.  I have been unable to find their marriage bann or death records of Sarah.

I found out how to go to different households - I did find a George and Jane Park (b 1781/1786 respectively), and further down I found another George and Elizabeth Park (1766 and 1771) - quite possibly Sarah's grandparents. Unfortunately the records in New Cumnock aren't the best, with apparently many records missing.

Quintin and George are both on the 1851 census with John and Elizabeth (cannot find Quintin in 1841 but he is definitely a son of John and Sarah). George was born around 1843 at New Cumnock and is also with the family in 1861.

So that makes me think these would be the 2 boys John was left with after Sarah died and John Park is the son of John Park born 1804 at Old Cumnock.

Shame the 1841 doesn't give relationships.

I think you are right - I didn't find George in the census - so I thought that John Park was the other son.  Perhaps I can find some adoption papers.  Interestingly, George is also the names to the other Parks several houses away.  I have not been able to find OPRs for Sarah - perhaps this will help.

Assuming that George is the father, several residences away from the cited residence of John Park, there is a George Park b estimated 1781 and Jane b 1786.  If usual naming conventions were used, then Sarah Park/John Wilson would have have their eldest daughter named after Sarah's mother.  The second daughter would be named after John's mother.  The first daughter of Sarah Park and John Wilson is Jean/Jane.  The second daughter is named Elizabeth.  John's mother was named Elizabeth Lambert Wilson who married Quintin Wilson.  John's first son was named Quintin, named after his father.  His second son is named George.  This is a strong suggestion that the parent's of Sarah Park are George and Jane.

Now how is the best way to prove this?  I have been unable to find either marriage Banns or birth records for Sarah on SP.  I also have not been able to find it on familysearch.org.    When I do a search on George Park and Jane, in New Cumnock, I find George Park and Jean Weir.

Where do I go from here?
