Mother and baby home ??
« on: Friday 28 December 12 16:35 GMT (UK) »
I have found a the illigitimate birth of my G Grandfather in 1867.
It was in Union street, west bromwich. His mother came from the Tamworth area where she returned to, (on census).
Would anybody know if there was a mother and baby home there ?

I lived nr West Bromwich for abt 15 years and did some research in the local area. I don't know of a mother and baby home there but if you email Sandwell archives they could tell you.  archives_service[-- at --]sandwell.gov.uk. They are based at Rolfe Street Smethwick (if you know the area) and are really helpful. Happy hunting M x ;)

I don't think there were such things as 'Mother and Baby Homes' in 1867, you just made the best of it.  Relations would help out, some girls 'in the family way' would be sent away to friends or family living a good few miles away from the family home.  The Census's are full of children who are staying in someone else's household, whether it be Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles or other relations.  HTH Linell.

My gt-grandfather was illegitimate, and was born iin 1860 at the Union Workhouse at Trysull, near Wolverhampton. His mother was a 'house servant', and she was presumably 'kicked out' by her parents (her father was an agricultural labourer, so probably they could not afford to keep her at home). She left the Workhouse shortly after his birth, but two months later she was back in again, described as "destitute". A widowed local shoemaker later married her, (he had five children of his own, so there was a happy ending!

Just thought, I should have mentioned that her parents lived at Codsall, which is some way from Trysull, but Codsall came under the Trysull Union area (as far as I can gather). I got the details from the Staffordshire Record Office.
