Garstonite
I agree that Irene Highton is probably the one I'm looking for. The 1911 Census shows her at aged 4 and is the only child born to the marriage (alive or dead).
K Garrard - As I have said the 1911 Census doesn't show any children of the marriage who subsequently died.
Heather Julie - Thanks for that info - I has the date but not the church where the marriage took place
and finally Heywood - Not the correct family - Just a big coincidence another William Highton marrying a Mary Elizabeth.
Thanks to all of you for going to all that trouble to assist. I'm down under in Australia so not able to get to any Records Office in Wigan to check personally.
Uncle John

Hello again,

As HeatherJ has said, there is a birth for Irene Highton in Tranmere in 1907 so the Birkenhead marriage is likely to be her.

(Not sure whether you were thinking it was the Wigan Irene.)

regards
heywood

William's address on the 1905 marriage is also 5 Cecil St (Lan-OPC), so the burials match up properly.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
