Scotlands People extracts

I have located a marriage and viewed the entry on Scotlands People but it just gives the date and names of the couple. If i order the extract (£12) will that give me any more information such as ages and parents names or is it just a copy of what i am looking at??

Hi and welcome 

As you are having to order the cert, I assume that it's within the past 75 years. If so, it should  give info on occupations, addresses, ages,  parents, etc., as all 1855 and later certs do.

If you look under "About Our Records" on SP there are examples that can be viewed.

The image you download is a copy of the £12 official extract so definitely dont order that.

Would be good if gingernutter confirmed the date of the marriage as, mentioned by Brevitas, it is not clear. Subject to dates it could be an entry from the Old Parish Registers (pre1855), or one post the start of official registration from 1855 and downloadable on SP, currently up to 1936. Post this year, all marriage certs need to be ordered as they cannot be viewed online.

Gingernut, I think from what you say, you are looking at the index results page? It is this that shows bride and groom's names.

How about putting the year and the names you are looking for and some people
might be able to look it up for you without you spending £12.

JSHC is right, the extract is from the OPR's sorry i didn't make that clear by not putting any dates! I guess i was hoping for more information about their parents. The marriage took place on 1st March 1813.

James Williamson was born c.1793 in Moniaive and his wife Margaret Kerr c.1791. I am not sure when they died either! So back to the drawing board..i will have to try and locate them in the census to try and narrow down a few possible years of death or if I can find a memorial inscription...!

With some luck they lived past 1855 (and the start of official registration in Scotland) and you can pick up their trail through death certs which would/should include their parents' names 

Unfortunately, as you have found, Old Parish Register entries are a bit of hit and miss affair  Sometimes you are lucky and they include a little more info, most times not and they are no more than a single line entry with no more than bride and groom names and marriage/banns date. However, you don't know what will be included until you look (lucky dip comes to mind  ).
