St Bride's church London - look up request
« on: Wednesday 26 December 12 11:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi - I don't know if anyone can look up the marriage licence for John Peter Brandstrom and Margaret Tennyson Williams who left their homes in Hull/Grimsby and married in St Brides church - London on 25/9/1833. Alternatively does anyone know where I can access this record? She was only 20, whilst he was possibly 39, and whilst the marriage record is on Ancestry it says the marriage was by licence. Within a couple of years both had married others which adds to the mystery - regards Hardiman-Burton

A visit to the clergyman issuing the licence resulted in three documents, an allegation or affidavit, a marriage bond and the licence. The actual licence was issued to the bridegroom who presented it to the priest conducting the marriage. The licence could then have been kept by the priest, or returned to the diocesan registries, or given to the couple on their wedding day and kept within the family, but usually does not survive. The allegation and bond would be filed in the Diocesan Registry. After 1823 bonds ceased to be necessary.
You can see examples of a Marriage Bond, Allegation, and Licence at  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,438148.msg3016813.html#msg3016813 The actual wording varies from time to time.

A copy may be available for a fee from the Society of Genealogists

http://www.sog.org.uk/online/vgstatus.shtml

There is a licence dated 24 September 1833 in the names of Williams & Brandstrom.

or try the LDS as mentioned by the SOG, but I can't find the film in their catalogue.

The marriage entry in Family Search https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NJWD-8YN is from Film 413282 "Marriage allegations for the Province of Canterbury, 1660-1851"
