Straith, Oxfordshire
« on: Tuesday 25 December 12 22:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
I am helping out a family member who has  a Richard Ilsley born about 1828 in a place called Straith, Oxfordshire. This detail is from the 1851 census entry where he is married to Martha. The census entry is very clearly written.
Does anyone have any idea where this [Straith] could be a reference to. A search on google shows little suggestion, as does the Oxford genuki site.

Thanks
Kevan

Thanks,
I have since done a search on other Ilsley families around this time; and a probable place of birth is Streatley, in Berkshire. I don't know the area, although I cover the pub history for both areas.
http://pubshistory.com/. Streatley is on the borders of both counties, I believe.

Many thanks for a quick response.

Merry Christmas to all researchers.

He was living in London for all those censuses, and regional accents may have played a part in the mis-interpretation! ;D

Also, as I know from personal experience, the further one gets from one's home town, the more general the stated place becomes!! :D

So perhaps born in the Reading area, but somewhere on the Oxfordshire side?
Some places in Oxfordshire are just 3 or 4 miles from Reading.

Just posting in case relevant.
On most Census Richard is born c 1823. Could he be older?

Marriage;
01 June 1820, St Giles, Reading, Berkshire
John CHASE
Catherine ILLSLEY

1841 Census
Street,
Whitchurch, Oxfordshire
HO107/882/9/Whitchurch
John CHASE, 50, Innkeeper
Catherine Chase, 40
Sarah Chase, 17
Louisa? Chase, 9
Richard ILSLEY, 19
Richard DAY, 70, Ag Lab
Jane Day, 70
All NOT born in County

1851/1861 Census Catherine Chase born c 1799 Englefield, Berkshire is living in Reading St Mary, Bekshire and Widowed.

Seems a bit of a coincidence re Oxfordshire/Berkshire as POB for Richard.

Trish :)

EDIT I cant find a Marriage for Richard/Martha!

Hi Trish,
Sadly this is the wrong Richard. This Richard is listed in 1871 as born Tylehurst, whilst the correct Richard is living in St Pancras by 1851 and married to a Martha. There are also a couple of parish births on line at ancestry, which help to clarify address of Willsted court.
Not a problem, as I have decided to add Whitchurch pubs to my site along the way!
Best
