Woods and May families in Surrey - please help
« on: Monday 24 December 12 21:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm hoping someone could help with another brick wall in my research into my wife's family tree. One of her great-great-grandmothers was Charlotte Woods, nee May, b.1816 in Elstead, Surrey, and died in 1898 in Farnham. Her husband (my wife's 2xgreat grandfather) was George Woods (b. 1813 in Godalming and d.1878 in Hambledon) and they married in Guildford in 1839. Any help on the following brick walls would be hugely appreciated:

* Charlotte Wood's parents - William and Sarah May - I have no other details other than their names, so anything including their births or marriage, or Sarah's maiden name would be great if possible
* George Wood's parents - John Woods and Elizabeth Woods (nee Giles) - again I have nothing beyond names, so anything including their births or marriage details would be great too if possible.

Once again, thanks for any help.

Jon.

Hi Suz,

Many thanks for the helpful reply :o) Certainly looks a possibility. It's a pity that Charlotte wasn't living with them which would have helped, but I guess if she got married in 1839 she was living somewhere else. I've not been able to find her or George on the 1841 census - would you be able to help with this also?

Many thanks again.
Jon.

I don'tthink the William & Sarah May I found in 1841 are Charlotte's parents
It looks like Chalotte and George were living with Charlotte's mother in 1841 - I am spelling names asthey appear on image

1841
Hankly
Elstead Surrey
Sarah May 50
George May 25 ag lab
George Wood 25 ag lab
Sharlott Wood 20
Sharlott Wood 1
all b in county
HO107 1072 1

there is a little squiggle on the end of "Wood" -so possibly it could be read as "Woods"

I think  George Woods family may be on same page

This might be the marriage of Charlotte's parents:

William May married Sarah Legg, by banns at Elstead,1805.  No other infomation from this source though.

Hi Suz,

Just noticed, and thought I'd let you know, that on later info I have for Charlotte, her address on the census from 1851-1891 is Hankley Farm, Elstead, which would tie in with your updated info below, so thanks for this!

Best wishes,
Jon.

Hello, I am new to this group!

Today I am trying to use local Godalming records to prove or disprove my hypothesis that "John Wood of Portsmouth", who emigrated to the American Colonies before 1643 and died in Rhode Island in 1655, was originally of Godalming.

When John Wood died in 1655 his children were named in court records. We know his children included

"oldest son" George (b. bef. 1620),
a son "John" (b. abt 1620) died in 1704 "aged 84".
A third son "William" and
a forth son "Thomas" were also named, but little is known of them.
Several daughters were named, however these may have been born in the colonies.

I understand that the ‘Percy Woods index’ can be searched only through the Museum local studies library - but the library is closed at this time due to the pandemic.

Is there any online source for accessing the ‘Percy Woods index’?

Alternatively, is there anyone whose family tree includes a "John Wood" born abt 1620 to father John Wood"? Name variations of course possible :-)

Thanks!
Mike Wood
