Argentina, McGaul family
« on: Monday 24 December 12 16:14 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Argentina is a totally new country for me as regards family history research but I have a family, James McGaul, born Wigtownshire around 1839 who I believe emigrated to Argentina between 1851 and 1869. He married a Janet Johnstone, 22nd April 1869 in Buenos Aries (Rootsweb) and I have him and his family in the 1895 census of Argentina.

Although I believe this is "my" James McGaul are there any marriage, birth, death etc records available which could prove this? If I have the correct James his father should be Andrew McGaul and mother Elizabeth Harris. James was living with his parents at the time of the 1851 census.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Thanks

Bob

I haven't looked for your James but FamilySearch has quite a few Argentine records [including censuses, church records, and some baptisms and marriages] so might find something there.

Bob back again

I have just found this site which I think is going to answer a lot of my questions. It could be well worth looking at for anybody elsewith ancestors in that area.

Hi Bob,

If you get access to some Argentine records, bear in mind that "James" is a tricky name in the old Argentine records. Often those first names were transcribed into Spanish equivalents, but in the case of James I've rarely seen it transcribed as "Jaime" (which would be the equivalent today). Instead, I've often seen it transcribed as "Santiago".

Cheers,

Thank you for your replies. One of my ancestors, James McGaul is indeed transcribed as Santiago not only on a census but even at his burial which I have recently found.

Thank you

Thanks for that. I am trying to trace James Reil and keep seeing a Santiago coming to Scotland. This must be him.  Still no luck though trying to find records of him or his family in Argentina.

If you look in the Family Search address above there are one or two mentions of the name Reil.

The only other mention I can fine is :-
MULHALL'S HANDBOOK OF THE RIVER PLATE, 1885
BUENOS AYRES (CAMP) DIRECTORY
Reil    John    Carmen de Areco
