Trystan, why not start a "RC wishlist" thread, so people can post suggestions ?

There is only one thing on RC that really irritates me, and this is not entirely new.  On other forums that I frequent (not genealogical ones, I might add), the forum somehow remembers where I'd got to in the individual threads.   For example, on logging in to RC today, the forum would remember that I'd read up to post #56 on "Your New Roots Chat is here" and clicking on it would take me to the last read message in that thread.  I know this topic is one of the fastest-growing threads on the forum, but it's a bit of a pain going back from page 31 to page 15, without several laborious mouse clicks.  A drop-down box for getting to a page number would be useful too.

Unfortunately the new layout looks a bit 'The only was is Essex'.     A triumph of style over substance.  The previous offering which was/s greatly appreciated was very clear in line.   

Why fix something that wasn't broken....

Have been posting less frequently for some time now, so shall take this opportunity to thank those that have helped me when searching.  This will be my last post.

I think you're mixing up the problems with the back end, that people don't really see, so don't know is "broken", with a front end that most people thought was pretty much fine.
The back-end could have been replaced whilst still leaving the front end as-was (or at least very similar). Trystan and Sarah took the decision to revamp the front-end at the same time and that is fair enough. In the main the new design is fine, but having done similar things in the past, I know that no matter how much you look at things, the only time you really know what parts will be unpopular is when it goes live. Yes, these things that are being mentioned are small things, and in the main, people won't stop visiting completely because of them. But sometimes it's those small things that reduce the enjoyment to a degree and maybe cause some people to visit less, which would be a shame, as it's the community on here that make it such a wonderful site.
Obviously, you can't please all of the people all of the time. But a handful of (small) things are being mentioned by a number of posters. These probably wouldn't take too long to tweak and then most of the people would be happy most of the time.
PS - Am I just being lucky or have the "things we can't mention" gone away? I just have blank space where they were/should be. (Confused smiley)

If I am looking at something in the "New replies" list and I click on the title, I get taken to the first or last reply, depending how I set that in my profile

..... say what caught the eye - the answer was the names of the "started by" poster as these were in bold blue and stronger than anything else. With due respect to all RootsChatters my feeling is that a poster's username is less important than the thread title (bold but palid brown) or the board name (blue italics).

My understanding of presentation styles has always been "less is more". On the "Unread" page there are three colours for text (black, brown and blue); three styles (bold, italic and standard) as well as several sizes and multiple icons and that is ignoring headings and borders and their contents. Overall the page has lost clarity and personally, I suspect I'm no longer taking in the important information of the topic itself.

Agree with poster MSHRMH on the above points.
Previously it was much easier to scan the topic titles to see what was of greatest interest.
As an amateur web designer I appreciate that many hours have gone into the redesign, I also appreciate what has been said about issues like speed and user limits.  If these were the  'broken' bits -- fine go fix them, but what was wrong with the fonts sizes and colours that determined the need to make these changes.
I find there is something odd (strange) regarding the display of posted images.  I'll have more thorough look at this aspect of the new design and post my comments later.

Some of the replies on this thread have been very rude, IMHO
