Well, I arrived on the site yesterday morning to see the 'Countdown clock', so I went off to do something else. Yesterday it looked like I would need to attend hospital as an out-patient over Christmas, so I got special permission from my wife to open her present to me early - it was a nice shiny new Samsung Tab 2 (7" screen) - I've since heard that my hospital visits won't be happening now. After setting the Samsung up, I tried visiting Roots Chat, and I was immediately presented with the Mobi version, which seemed more than adequate for use on the move. However, for those with screens of 7" or more, you would probably prefer to use the full version.
I think Trystan and Sarah have done a wonderful job in getting the new forum up and running in such a short space of time. All modern internet forums use databases, and databases can't be backed up when the forum is running, because they are forever changing as people post new messages. I used to run a small forum myself (nothing near RC scale!) so I know the work involved. After transferring all the data from one forum to the other you need to thoroughly test and do 'tweaks', all within the time contstraints that you have set yourself. There is nothing more demoralising after spending hours working on software that nobody pays to use than to have people moaning about nit-picking stuff like the size of fonts and background colours, especially when a lot of what they are moaning about could be remedied if they knew how to set up their own computers (sorry people, but it had to be said)

I'm sure that Trystan and Sarah will do some more 'fine tuning' as time allows.
The 'fixed-width' format is welcomed by me. As the owner of a wide-screen monitor, I'm always aware that my monitor will cause Windows to format the screen differently to those using square screens, and this difference in formatting can make differences to how my posts appear. Being a bit of a perfectionist, I don't like to see smilies dropping off the end of lines. A fixed width format ensures that all readers see the posts formatted the same.
So - Trystan, Sarah and the RC team - a big THANK YOU for the new forum. It's much more responsive than the old one, and I do like the new graphics. I appreciate all the work which I know you put in.
P.S. Can we have a 'thumbs up' smilie ?
