Peter POTTER born 1793 arrived Port Adelaide
« on: Tuesday 18 December 12 06:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am wanting any information at all on Peter Potter b. 1793, who arrived on the Somersetshire on August 24th 1839, Port Adelaide. He had about ten children with him. I descend from his son James who was married to Ellen Martin. Their son was Henry Potter who married Mary Dolby Emmett. They had William Frank Potter. She arrived with him (and was married). They settled in Lyndoch Valley, South Australia. Photos would be appreciated, I do not have a photo of any Potter past my grandfather.

The family was quite secretive, so almost no information was passed down. All my grandfather knew was the names of his parents.

Lyn

Hi Lyn,

Death notice for who appears to be your Peter.

South Australian Register (Adelaide, SA : 1839 - 1900)(about)
Monday 7 November 1864

 DEATHS. POTTER.— On the 3rd November, at his resi- dence, Lyndoch Valley, Mr. Peter Potter, aged 71 years (a colonist of 26 years), formerly of Lewes, Sussex, England.

I would have put the link up for the article itself for you but im having trouble with Trove links doing stupid things with me.

If you havent already checked Trove, its well worth it. [The link to Trove works ok with me but not links directly to articles.

This link will take you to a number of Family Notices on Trove newspapers that are obviously connected to your Peter Potter.

Lyn, without knowing the names of all the children, I can only identify the follwoing marriage....

Edward POTTER aged 25 married Jane WHITE aged 19 on 26th July 1860 in the Schoolroom, Rowland Flat.
Fathers = Peter POTTER & John WHITE
Ref = Bar  43/30

And this one seems very likely, given the Trove snippet re the estate of Peter Potter.....

Samuel POTTER aged 24 married Eliza GASTON aged 19 on 11th January 1855 at the residence of Samuel Potter, Lyndoch Valley.
Ref = Ade 22/220

Family Search has a Peter Potter marrying a Jane SINDEN on 1st February 1813 at
Saint Thomas, Lewes, Sussex, England.

There is also a record…..may be submitted, I’m not sure, that has Jane as Jane LINDEN.

There’s also the baptism of Caleb POTTER to Peter Potter and Sarah on 17th October  1813.

Given the name Caleb on the Estate Notice in the paper, I wonder if Peter was married twice?

There are trees on Mundia as well that have Caleb b.13.4.1813 d. 12.10.1885 Mt Barker, SA.
They also have Mary written as Mercy b.17.2.1816 d. 30.7.1884 Gawler.

Besides Caleb they also have Ellen b. 1814 died 1.4.1842 Adelaide.
Hannah b. 11.10.1827 died 1897 Wayville, SA.

There are about 40 trees on Mundia mentioning Peter POTTER.  Don't forget that a lot of those trees will have copied each others information and not gained it from official records.

A few have photo's.

Hope that helps,
Sashar
