Thanks for that Andy, he was in Leeds in 1901, which will probably rule that out.

I keep thinking I should of asked more questions when he was alive.   to late now.
best wishes

Just to say that his profession on the 1911 census was not Professional Footballer" or anything close?

So, he was very likely a gifted amateur footballer.
I'm not sure if there were many part-timers back then?

AT least we know he didn't play for Leeds City - dates are all wrong! - but maybe one of the other Leeds teams I mentioned before?

Leeds was (reportedly!) a rugby city back in those days - not much football about? ;D
A bunch of egg-chasers!! :D ;D

Hello  again, you are probably right,
I have him in the 1901 census lodging in Leeds, and he was  a case maker in a saw mill
nothing to do with football  !!!.
I will check out Hunslet F.C  but I am sure we are at the end of the road.
maybe this story was kept going to impress all the young males in the family. ha-ha.
thanks again
Happy New Year

Family stories tend to have a nugget of truth in them.
But many seem to get embellished over time! ;D

My grandmother's 2nd husband apparently played for Wigan Athletic!
We even have a team photo - but still can't prove he actually played for them! :(
