Rev William Bradshaw & Arthur Bradshaw
« on: Sunday 16 December 12 17:33 GMT (UK) »
After many years of searching UK records, I have just discovered that my Great Grandfather's two 'missing' brothers went to South Africa.

REV. WILLIAM BRADSHAW - born Derby, England in 1868 - formerly at Kedleston-street Chapel, Derby and then Johannesburg.
- ? went to South Africa around 1890

ARTHUR BRADSHAW - born Derby 29 Apr 1880 - went to South Africa with the St John Ambulance Brigade during the Boer War - ? around 1899/1900
- stayed on in South Africa after the Boer War, got a job on the railway and worked himself up to the position of stationmaster.
- later married a Dutch lady, Hester Anna Du Bruyn at Brandfort on 12 Dec 1905, and took over a farm (? near/at Winburg).
- ? may later have married Alice Victoria Eugene Dickason.

Any help as to how I can find out more would be appreciated.

Joe

I have found out that Arthur was awarded the St. John's Brigade medal during the Boer War.  If you look at www.eggsa.com and search for graves there is a photograph of his tomb, together with Alice Victoria Eugene as well as their daughter.

www.archsrch.gov.za is down at the moment, but it would be worth searching there for estate papers.

Will keep trying to find William!  ::)

Thanks very much Nookie, you're a star.

As usual with FH this raises more questions - didn't know there was a daughter !
Maybe I have a living relative over there !

Joe.

Had a look at www.archsrch.gov.za under RSA and found references to Arthur, as well as to Hester.

If you wish to obtain copies of these documents I suggest you request www.eggsa.com to obtain them for you for a very reasonable fee as this will be quicker than trying to get them directly from the archives.

The only reference I have found for William relates to him conducting a funeral, and was a minister in the Primitive Methodist Church.  Did he perhaps have a middle name?

Hi Nookie,

Thanks for your two replies.
As far as I know William didn't had a second name/initial but I have known people to add these later.
Can you tell me which church you found him taking the funeral ?

I am looking through the archives website you mentioned (web address seems to have changed !) and taking steps to trying and obtain any relevant documents.

Derek.

The correct address is www.national.archsrch.gov.za
I cannot remember how I found the funeral bit, but will look for it again and let you have the information.

Sorry about the mistake

Hi Joe, Rev William Bradshaw was my great grandfather. We know very little about the family and would love to get the family tree from you. All I know is that he served in a church in Stone Street, Johannesburg. He marries Emily Brailsford and had a son William who married Lilian Sarah Hibbins. They had 2 daughters Dyllis and Lois June ( my mother). William divorced Lilian and married again (possibly twice) having a son Denzil.
Would love to have more info up the tree from you.
