Dear Shanko

I have since found out that my ancestor, Charles Hill arrived in South Australia, Port Adelaide from England after 1854 so I was wondering if it is possible to check his shipping records.  He arrived with his wife, Mary Ann Hill.  His first son, Frederic was born in 1856 in South Australia.

Also, I wish to find out the shipping records for a John Davey who also came out to Australia from Cornwall after 1854.  He came out with his wife, Elizabeth.

Thank you kindly.

Heidi
heidi,

I have checked for your Hill family in the indexes but they are not mentioned.

Hi Shanko,
You must be the hardest worked researcher in the land so please excuse me if I am jumping the gun.
I initially sent in a request on the 23 August this year trying the operative word is trying! to find a families arrival, I am researching this family on behalf of my grandchildren, their father a Gillard having passed away, in case the message was lost I will repeat it. Regarding a Samuel Gillard born 1822 and his wife Margaret born 1828 both in Cornwall. A child Ann was baptized 11 May 1846 in Cornwall, the next child Elizabeth was born in Adelaide 21 Jun 1848 another child John was also born in Adelaide 15 Jan 1852, the family then went to try their luck in the Victorian goldfields it seems without a lot of luck!   I have yet to find their arrival in Australia, the birth of Elizabeth would suggest South Australia, I guess the surname could be slightly changed  I have come across it as Gaillard in the registers in Cornwall, Any assistance or suggestions most gratefully received.
Thank you Dennis
Dennis,

If you remember I did reply stating I found no Gillard family at all in any of the available shipping indexes. I don't know what else you want me to do, I have double checked twice but no family of that surname is on the indexes.

Sorry about this Shanko I must be doing something wrong, I checked from Go to Whoa on the South Australian Lookups and did not find the answer, I have had many contacts from Roots Chat on this subject but none appertaining to my query.
Thanks a lot for your efforts, as an aside if the query is finished does it ever get deleted? just curious.
Dennis

STOP PRESS, Regarding the Gillard Family I tried the site submitted on RootsChat by Spurling 1853 for the year 1847 the first ship was the ABOUKIR arriving Adelaide 4th September and among the passengers listed are Samuel, Margaret,Ann and a John Gillard, BINGO on the first three but John is a mystery at this time.

For those tracing Families that migrated to South Australia
the below link is a good source of information.
It contains PASSENGER LISTS 1836-1851
The Author also has passenger lists for other years too.

The above website is good BUT there are errors which I have found myself when going through original shipping documents, also not all have names and some are also missing. I do not use this website reasons being of what I have mentioned above.
The later years have not even been started.

Like with any online Genealogy resources you must check the ORIGINAL records to make sure you do have the correct details and information.

Good point Shanko
I'm one of the many who have naively trusted indexes only to find  errors.
To save money I trusted an entry in the Vic BDM birth index and spent ages on a wild goose chase only to find that the father's first name and mother's last name had been incorrectly transcirbed.
Transcriptions will always have an error rate so the source docs are always the best option.

How true, which is why I'd prefer to check all shipping records with the actual originals at the main repository where they are held.
Many times you do not find a certain family, like I haven't been able to locate some here via the indexes.

People make money out of doing these transcriptions and selling on a cd but most are incorrect in the data so shouldn't be allowed to be sold to the public unless they have been done with 100% accuracy, as someone could be tracing a certain line for years!
Births, deaths and marriage cd's are also a good example, so many errors in names which are nothing like the original documents when you view them

 G'day Shanko,
(sorry for posting this twice but I think it got buried among 4 requests or so)

I have ancestors (g-g-grandparents) William PAYNE (b. 1849) and Christina WARK (b. 1860), who made up a surname HAZLEMERE/HAZELMERE who married in 1882 in Sydney. The had a tiny old 'birthday motto book' which I inherited.

There is an entry in the Book 'left home for London and Australia July 31 1878' (I suspect this is Christina as it looks different to William's writing elsewhere in the book. On September 18 there are 2 entries -  Landed in Adelaide 1878, married 1879).

Christina's first child Olive (who survived to marry and have 14 children) was born around 1882. Officially Christina married William 31/10/1882 at St Peters in Darlinghurst, Sydney.

Thus I am wondering  which boats landed  in Adelaide  September 18 1878 and whether there was a William PAYNE (who I have some evidence was in Adelaide) or Christina WARK or HAZELEMERE on it, and a WARK  or HAZELMERE in a marriage in 1879 (or birth of Olive in 1882 who is not registered in NSW where the family was by late 1882.

I greatly appreciate all help,
cheers
