Hi Shanko,

Just wondering if you could do a couple of lookups of shipping records for me:

The people I am looking for are:

Nicholas De Garis, born Guernsey 16/08/1833
Mary Hamon nay De Garis born Guernsey 30/06/1835
Peter Hamon born Sark 1831
Julia De Garis born Guernsey 1837

and possibly

Georgina De Garis born Guernsey 1801
Nicoulas De Garis born ??

I know the first 4 definitely emigrated to Australia possibly direct from Guernsey, or maybe via England/France??

Basically I would like to know when/how they arrived in Australia and any other details available. So I guess the things to look up would be:

·   Official passenger lists mainly of immigrants arriving in South Australia under United Kingdom assisted passage schemes 1847 - 1886

·   Shipping - Hodge IndexPart 1: Arrivals 1837 - 1845
Part 3: Arrivals 1846 - 1855
Part 5: Arrivals 1856 - 1859 November

If you could check this stuff for me it would be sensational!!!!

Thanks very much,

Andy  :D

I did find a DeGaris family but they were not of the names you gave. No Hamon families what so ever Im afraid :(
Are you 100% sure they went to South Australia?

Hi Shanko,

I'd absolutely love to have a couple of lookups done, if possible.

First is a marriage, of Alexander REID to Ann MATHESON in Adelaide in about 1853. According to Alexander's death cert, he arrived in SA from Scotland and then went to Victoria within a year. Ann arrived in Portland (Vic) in late 1853 and their first child was born in Vic (apparently) in 1855 so whether they actually were ever in SA together I'm not sure. I'm just going on what his death cert says. Also, the only Victorian record I can find that could be their first child (Annie Reid b 1855) has a father as Alexander CAMERON, so if you could maybe check for Annie's birth in SA instead of Vic, and also for a marriage between an Alexander Cameron and Ann Matheson. Sorry this one's so complicated!

Second is the marriage of Arthur Henry GIBBS to Amanda Hermine Augusta MESECKE on 9 Nov 1881 at the property of Johannes Mesecke (Amanda's father). I'm just interested in other details that may be on the record, such as parent's names and places of birth (particularly Arthur's).

Thanks in advance,

Kerryn :)

Hi Kerryn

There are no births for an Annie REID 1855, none with a father Alexander and none before 1864.
Cannot find the marriage either for Alexander REID and Ann MATHESON.

However, The GIBBS one I did find:
Arthur Henry GIBBS 23 Single
Amanda Amener Augusta MESECKE 21 Single
Grooms father: Richard GIBBS
Brides father: John Charles August MESECKE
Marriage date: 9/11/1881
Place: Residence of John Charles August MESECKE
District: Adelaide

Hope this helps

Shanko

Shanko

Shanko,

Thanks for checking that for me. Yes I am 99% sure they all emigrated to South Australia, as there is death records of all but Julia in Adeliade, and it is also known that Julia married someone from Adelaide!

I actually just thought of another couple of things that would be great if you could look up for me:

Death record of Julia DE GARIS (or possibly KING) DOB 26/10/1837 in Guernsey
Marriage record of Julia DE GARIS to AARON KING (of Adelaide)

and this one is a bit of a long shot but:

Death record of Joseph Garibaldi MOLD born 1862 in Walsall, Staffordshire, UK.

He married Emily Helen HAMON on 23/1/1890 in Adelaide and left her shortly after their daughter was born in 1891. Apparently he was a gambler among other things, but no one knows what happened to him. Also if you can think of any other types of records I could search for him, could you please let me know?

Thanks very much, I know that might have been a big ask.

Andy

Thanks Shanko!

I think I may have found a matching census record in England for him, now that I know his father's name. That helps a lot.

Cheers,

Hello Shanko

Would it be possible to lookup two ship arrivals into South Australia.

(1) "OCEAN CHIEF" departed Plymouth and arrived in South Australia on 7th April 1864.
The passenger I wish to confirm on board this ship is:- BUSH John Ryder from Devon, England. (abt. 19 years old).
(If correct where can I purchase copy of Shipping Record).

(2) Do not know ship name they arrived on in South Australia, but I am looking for:
WILLIAMS Thomas and his wife WILLIAMS Mary Ann (nee Bishop). Possibly from Devon??. I believe time period of arrival would be between 1845-1848. Their first child born in SA was Nov 1848.

If impossible to check 2nd request I thank you for your time.

Cheers
Kabana
Hi Kabana

My trip today to State Records found no John Ryder BUSH on the ship 'Ocean Chief' for 1864.

I am heading back there next week so if you do have anything else to add about your guy please let me know and I'll check for you

Andy,

Today at State records I again searched for your De Garis family but still nothing at all in the shipping records. Just because they all died in South Australia does not mean they initially arrived in South Australia.

You might have to check with other states for their arrival into Australia.

RE: BDM's I'll check those out for you over the weekend.

I presume you didn't find Grasmere passenger list. If the McNicols aren't on this ship the time frame would be between 1849 and 1855 for searching. Thanks

Cazay
Cazay

There is no James McNicol at all on the Grasmere ship 1852.
Will look for them on other ships in the next two weeks
