Hi Chris,
Have you any idea of when they may have come out to South Australia? I know you state she had been in SA for 1 year before she married but she may not have come straight to SA to start with. The same with George.
I am going to the State records this week and if you have an approx date I will go through the records for you.

I'll try to help locate them for you

Hi Shanko
Thanks for your offer to help - if I can ever help with any WA stuff let me know.
From what I've been told Ellen arrived in Australia via SA c1856 and was in SA for approx 1 year before going to NSW.  Her parents were Bridget Callaghan and Thomas McManus and known siblings Hugh and Ann.  Hugh came via NSW much later.  I don't know if  any family travelled with her.

I'm not so sure about George so don't worry about him - apparently there was a comprehensive obituary written  about him and I've just ordered a copy from the NSW State Library.  He may well have arrived at another port.  I've checked the online ists available.  The obit may give more info about hiis arrival etc so it is probably worth checking that first - he could have moved around a bit in 5 years. He was a fairly successful miner  and lived at Wackey Valley SA  when he married Ellen.  Made enough money to buy a farm in what is now Young NSW though lost it in a drought.
Thanks heaps
Chris

Miranda

Your best bet would be to put a posting on the general board for Victoria lookup requests as I only do South Australian lookups sorry.

Hi Shanko,

I'd absolutely love to have a couple of lookups done, if possible.

First is a marriage, of Alexander REID to Ann MATHESON in Adelaide in about 1853. According to Alexander's death cert, he arrived in SA from Scotland and then went to Victoria within a year. Ann arrived in Portland (Vic) in late 1853 and their first child was born in Vic (apparently) in 1855 so whether they actually were ever in SA together I'm not sure. I'm just going on what his death cert says. Also, the only Victorian record I can find that could be their first child (Annie Reid b 1855) has a father as Alexander CAMERON, so if you could maybe check for Annie's birth in SA instead of Vic, and also for a marriage between an Alexander Cameron and Ann Matheson. Sorry this one's so complicated!

Second is the marriage of Arthur Henry GIBBS to Amanda Hermine Augusta MESECKE on 9 Nov 1881 at the property of Johannes Mesecke (Amanda's father). I'm just interested in other details that may be on the record, such as parent's names and places of birth (particularly Arthur's).

Thanks in advance,

Kerryn :)

Hi Shanko,

Just wondering if you could do a couple of lookups of shipping records for me:

The people I am looking for are:

Nicholas De Garis, born Guernsey 16/08/1833
Mary Hamon nay De Garis born Guernsey 30/06/1835
Peter Hamon born Sark 1831
Julia De Garis born Guernsey 1837

and possibly

Georgina De Garis born Guernsey 1801
Nicoulas De Garis born ??

I know the first 4 definitely emigrated to Australia possibly direct from Guernsey, or maybe via England/France??

Basically I would like to know when/how they arrived in Australia and any other details available. So I guess the things to look up would be:

·   Official passenger lists mainly of immigrants arriving in South Australia under United Kingdom assisted passage schemes 1847 - 1886

·   Shipping - Hodge IndexPart 1: Arrivals 1837 - 1845
Part 3: Arrivals 1846 - 1855
Part 5: Arrivals 1856 - 1859 November

If you could check this stuff for me it would be sensational!!!!

Thanks very much,

Andy  :D

Hi ...need some help for a few lookups as you have an extensive library !

Have already done extensive research for the Spurling families that migrated in the 1850s.

(Q 1 ) However, havent been able to trace a
WILLIAM SPURLING born Banham , Norfolk abt 1842 or 1843
I know that at aged 10 years
Migrated to South Australia on ship "Shackamaxon" with Family (Parents William & Lucy and Siblings -
4 brothers including Robert, Joshua, Samuel & James).
Departed Liverpool, England  4th Oct 1852.
They arrived Port Adelaide, South Australia 19th Jan 1853.
Have managed to trace both Parents and all 4 brothers.

(Q2)
I understand that there are some Spurling's buried at West Terrace Cemetery. Wondering what records there are available. Believe one was buried in the destitutes section.

Believe this is the youngest sibling - but the record doesnt
show place of death or burial (could it be West Terrace Cemetery? )

Also there any possibility to check the below record
(believe the christian name should be "James" migrated to South Australia 1850)
Is this burial also listed for West Terrace Cemetery?
Note residence shows "Maylands".

Regarding Wackey Valley SA, where is that? I have checked at my local library and also state library and there is no mention of a place Wackey Valley here

Hi Shanko
Sorry the spelling was incorrect Wakey not Wackey although I don't think it helps.

George and Ellen married at the Catholic Chapel in Mintaro in1857.  George's "Residence at time of Marriage" was Wakey Valley and his occupation was "Farmer" He had also been a miner.  One of the witnesses, George Harrop, was also a farmer from Wakey Valley. I thought that it was in the Clare district.
Googling Wakey Valley didn't turn up anything either- which is odd.  I have the marriage cert and got the info from that.  Mustn't have been very big :)
Thanks ciao Chris
