I am looking to see if anyone has any on Edward Hammer born in 1862. He married Mary Anne Rickard in Broken Hill/Silverton in 1886
You have probably realised that it cannot be your Edward named in the Police Gazette as he was married and fathering children in Broken Hill in 1889.
Kathy are you going to obtain a transcription of the 1886 marriage registration. This would be my first step in researching Edward's origins and the information was given by him.
Thank you for that - I am waiting to hear back from the BH Library and Births Deaths and Marriages to see if they have any further info
Kathy
Kathy the births are online so perhaps just an enquiry about any
HAMMER/HAMMEN family information may prove more fruitful. Perhaps they may know the location of the early parish records. Local newspapers can be a mine of information - pardon the pun

Edward was not a boilermaker in 1903 as he gave his occupation as a miner on his electoral listing. The date of the photograph you have on your online tree was of a much later era as it includes his son as an adult.
Unfortunately the online indexes are full of mistranscriptions. As wivenhoe has suggested, one of the children's birth certificate would also be helpful however it won't have the names of his parents.
Cheers
