I am looking to see if anyone has any on Edward Hammer born in 1862. He married Mary Anne Rickard in Broken Hill/Silverton in 1886

You have probably realised that it cannot be your Edward named in the Police Gazette as he was married and fathering children in Broken Hill in 1889.

Kathy are you going to obtain a transcription of the 1886 marriage registration.  This would be my first step in researching Edward's origins and the information was given by him.

Thank you for that - I am waiting to hear back from the BH Library and Births Deaths and Marriages to see if they have any further info

Kathy

Kathy the births are online so perhaps just an enquiry about any HAMMER/HAMMEN family information may prove more fruitful.  Perhaps they may know the location of the early parish records.  Local newspapers can be a mine of information - pardon the pun ;)  Edward was not a boilermaker in 1903 as he gave his occupation as a miner on his electoral listing.  The date of the photograph you have on your online tree was of a much later era as it includes his son as an adult.

Unfortunately the online indexes are full of mistranscriptions.   As wivenhoe has suggested, one of the children's birth certificate would also be helpful however it won't have the names of his parents.

Cheers :D

Hi I would not discount this record, he may have been in Australia illegally and they may have been sending him back to his own country, there is also the family lore about him jumping ship, I would also say that the description of him is  similar to his photo
Family History is a Pandora's box if you don't like what you see find a new hobby, only concentrate on the proven facts and not the facts you think you know.

I always recommend researchers find a little about the era and some possible reasons that an event occurred.

Edward HAMMER deserted from the German warship ship OLGA on 21 May 1889 while docked in Sydney Harbour where it had arrived 14 Apr 1889.  It had been damaged in the Samoan Crisis 1887-1889. I have attached the item from the Gazette  dated 22 Mary 1889 so there can be no misunderstanding as to its content and presentation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samoan_crisis

Edward and Mary married in 1886 and were having children in Broken Hill in the far west of New South Wales 1143 kms from Sydney 1888, 1900  and then to 1909.

The RICKARDS were Cornish miners who emigrated to South Australia and like my OH's ancestors, moved to Broken Hill when the copper mining finished in the area of South Autralia known as the Copper Triangle. Edward and Mary married in 1886 following the founding of Broken Hill in 1885.  Perhaps they met in South Australia prior to the RICKARD family moving to the newly established mining area of NSW.  Perhaps Edward emigrated/jumped ship in South Australia not NSW.   Edward's occupation on the 1903 electoral roll was miner.

Cheers

And as I mentioned there is no headstone listed. Just to save you visiting unless of course you want a photo of the grave location :)

I have enjoyed many trips to Broken Hill especially memorable were the meals at the Broken Earth Restaurant viewing the sunsets :)

Cheers ;D

Kathy there are a number of online trees for the HAMMER family however a private tree is the only one that has Edward's place of birth as the Netherlands.  Have you contacted the owner of this tree?

Cheers

Thank you Cando - Love your work. I have now sent an email to the Private Owner.  My father showed me the headstone at Cheltenham a few months ago.  I use to travel to Broken Hill alot but that was before I started this search :(
