Location of Storm Hill, Hyde Park
« on: Sunday 09 December 12 23:55 GMT (UK) »
A location named "Storm Hill, Hyde Park, Antrim" is listed as a birth place of several of my Great Grandmother's family members around 1870. I can find two references for Hyde Park but nothing of Storm Hill.  I have purchased several maps of Co. Antrim and cannot locate it. Thank you for any assistance. Karen

Storm Hill, Hyde Park, Co. Antrim is mentioned here- suspect these might be your relatives based on your earlier Rootschat posts-

Could be the name of an area.

Thank you for that information.  You were correct as to the above mentioned as some of the relatives I was referring to. I read the listing where the name Storm Hill was in quotes. I will check my maps for Randalstown, although I may not find it there. I am wondering if it was a common but not an official name for the area. Thank you for the kind response.  I appreciate the information.  Karen

In 1879, there was an auction of a property called The Dairy in the townland of the Grange of Mallusk (a.k.a. Molusk and variants) in the parish of Templepatrick, then owned by the renowned Arthur H. Pakenham.  The property comprised a mansion house, offices and 14 outlying dwelling houses, with sitting tenants. In the event that no-one could buy the whole property outright, it was to be sold in lots.

Anyway, one of the lots was called Storm Hill, comprising a slated dwelling house, offices and 78 acres of land.

On a quick look at the following link, I couldn't find the exact house but I think I can get close. If you search for the Grange of Mallusk - you might have to play around a while - you can eventually zoom in on that townland (I recommend to a scale of 1:3000) and see The Dairy, Mount Pakenham Linen Works and HydePark very nearby.  I imagine Storm Hill may be one of the houses in the vicinity.

On a modern map, the townland stretches west of Sandyknowes roundabout, one way to drive to it is to take the Hightown Road out of Glengormley.

Edited to add: Griffiths Valuation also shows the townland and you may prefer to use that, do a placename search for Molusk, Grange of, then look up the map for anyone there.  Can't see any Moores there at that point though.

Thank you so much gaffy for the research and all the information. You have given me some great leads which I will also pass on to my cousin. She is also involved in the genealogy hunt.   Karen
