Though I find it hard to believe thatTrystan hadn't posted anything on this forum since 2004!

Of course he has! But the 2004 posting is locked and so stays in the same place.. At the moment this is the one which appears immediately below it.
Take a look at the board and you will see http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,284.0.html (assuming of course that another post doesn't leapfrog over this one)

It's the stickied topics which always stay at the top of a board- sometimes they are also locked.

My query remains.
what's the point of giving us something to go to which we may not be vitally interested in?  The more logical 'previous' would be what we had looked at previously.

Dawn, if you want to look at your previous viewing - RC or otherwise  - it easy to use your own BACK button to go directly to whatever you like.

There is always the 'view new replies to your posts' option.

I think it must be difficult trying to please everyone by putting every suggestion into practise.

Keep up the good work Trystan, I'm sure we are all very appreciative.

Su
I know how to view my own 'previous'

That is not what my query is about.

Every forum I have signed up to has these "Previous" and "Next" buttons, referring to the topics!

Somebody, somewhere obviously uses them? ;D ;D

I think it's just part of the forum software that RootsChat is based on, and nothing that Trystan can do anything about?

My own wish is to be able to de-select certain forums from notification?
I have no interest (for example) in Scotland or Photograph reconstruction!

Like Dawn, I can't see any reason for having these buttons, and I can't see why anyone would ever use them as they seem to be pretty useless. But I'm sure you are right in saying that they are just part of the software.

To be honest, I didn't even know they existed till it was mentioned on this thread.  ;) I intend to just ignore them.  ;D

Yes, and I would love to be able to mark all posts read which is a common feature on forums.  There are thousands upon thousands of posts which I will never read, and yet they all carry a distracting "new" tag unless I physically open them.  I do so wish I could clear them.

If it's not possible to give us a "mark all posts read" button, is there perhaps a way that the settings could be adjusted so that unread posts only show up as "new" the first time we visit the forum after they've been posted, and not on subsequent visits?
