Hocknorton lodge
« on: Sunday 09 December 12 16:47 GMT (UK) »
I've come across a probate entry for James Rennie who died at Hocknorton Lodge Camberley in 1931.
Can anyone tell me what sort of a property this was?
The only reference when doing a search was that there was a picture donated to the V and A museum.
Thank you in advance
Jo

Dear Mumjo,

On the internet I had a look at the Street Directory of Surrey for 1913, the latest one and nearest 1931 and came across the following entry:-

Private Residents - Major Frank R.H. Chapman, Hocknorton, Beech Avenue, Camberley.

If this is the one then it was a private house. Wonder if any fellow members in the area might be able to throw more light on this, perhaps a Local Historical Society ?

Regards,

fifthwheel

Thank you fifthwheel for that information, i have emailed the surrey history society to see if they can tell me anything but they are closed until the 18th.
I have been doing a little more searching since my post and one of the phone directories for 1928 has a Hocknorton ldg on London Road, occupied by Lt Col J D'Oyly. So i'm looking to see if there is a connection. It could be that they lent it to a friend while they were abroad.
Thanks to Rosie also for her PM.

I'm going to have to perfect my searching skills somewhat,  :-[ I'd looked and found nothing that mentioned Hocknorton Lodge.
Thanks very much hanes tenulu. Will have a closer look at these.

I lived in this house in the 80's, it was an old officers house for Sandhurst. A 5 bedroom house with coach house, hope this helps?

Johnep66 Thankyou soooooo much for that information. It really helps,  i don't suppose you have any photos do you? And an exact location.
I think it has now been demolished but am not sure.
The local archives couldn't help as to it's location.

My family were the last to own it and when we sold, we sold together with next door and they demolished them and built a set of about 14 houses on the land. First house I ever lived in, I absolutely loved it. Was owned by Laurence Van Der Post (Prince Charles' god father) before us.

It was on the A30, just opposite the firestation.

Was also very haunted!

What do you need the information on?

I have a picture back in Spain, where my mother now lives so cant get anything for a while I'm afraid.

I have been trying to find a link between my SIL's great grandfather and the person i was looking at (James Rennie) who died in 1931, aged 27. His parents lived in Uxbridge and were Australian. their maid was my SIL's great grandmother. (G.grandfather was in the army and was a friend of the family)I was curious to know why he would be at Hocknorton Lodge (which i found was owned by Ingaret Giffard(later Laurens Van der Post's wife) mother at that time. She was married to an army officer. John d'Oyly, and i was only guessing that it was an army house.  But couldn't understand why an Australian born man would be in the British army, although he was only 4 when he came to England.
I would be interested to see a copy of a photo, you could perhaps PM me if you manage to get hold of one.
Thanks in advance Jo
