Sims family in Riddings Derbys.
« on: Sunday 09 December 12 15:32 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace John Sims who the 1861 census shows as having been born in Riddings, Derbyshire in 1817 but find that the village church was only built in 1832.  Does anyone know where there may be records of baptism etc held.  I have not been able to trace census records before 1861 when he was living in West Bromwich  but I do know from his marriage certificate that his father was also named John and was an excavator.  .

Here's the family in 1851:

HO107/2025/342/26
Duke St, West Bromwich

John SIMS  Head  32  Coal Miner  b. West Bromwich
Mary SIMS  Wife  26  b. Wednesbury
Eliza SIMS  Dau  7  Scholar  b. West Bromwich
Robert SIMS  Son  5  Scholar  b. West Bromwich
[Unnamed] SIMS  Son  1 week  b. West Bromwich

Although John gives his place of birth in 1851 as West Bromwich, this seems to match the family in 1861:

RG9/2026/34/25
Duke St, West Bromwich

John SIMS  Head  41  Coal Miner  b. Rhyddings, Derbyshire
Mary SIMS  Wife  39  b. Wednesbury
Eliza SIMS  Dau  15  b. Wednesbury
Robert SIMS  Son 14  Mill Furnace Man  b. Wednesbury
Joseph SIMS  Son  10  Forgeman  b. Wednesbury
Hannah SIMS  Dau  8  b. Wednesbury
Thomas SIMS  Son  5  b. Wednesbury
Mary SIMS  Dau  2  b. Wednesbury
William SIMS  Son  11 months  b. Wednesbury

Riddings ecclesiastical parish was formed in 1851 from the parish of Alfreton. The church was a former Chapel of Ease.

Thank you all very much.  This does seem to be "my" John.  He continues to use West Bromwich as place of birth on census' up to 1881 when he reverts to Derbyshire and I think I have traced one of the witnesses at his wedding (Robert Nelson) as being born in Alfreton

John Sims is my 2 x great grandfather through his son Robert (1846- 1923).  I have his marriage certificate for 5 Feb 1844 in West Bromwich showing wife Mary Ann Wright, father as John and his age as 27. I also have his death certificate 28 Dec 1883 and a copy of his will listing all his children but have had trouble tracing his birth and where he was prior to marriage so his birth details would be marvellous. I was hoping to "flesh out" the family - his granddaughter, my grandmother, never spoke of her family.
