He enlisted in Royal Berkshire Regiment 14 Sep 1914. Judging from his regimental number he was transferred to the Royal Berks 1st Home Service Battallion in late 1916 (which suggests he was, by then, deemed unfit for service abroad).
He served abroad from Nov 1915 - which suggests that he went to France to one of the battalions mauled in the Battle of Loos (1, 2 , 5 & 8th battalions were all involved). However the 6, 7 & 4.1 battalions were also in France by then - he could have served with any of them. His date of enlistment would favour one of the Service battalions if it wasn't for his relatively late arrival in France (most Sep 1914 recruits would have travelled to France with their battalion in the summer of 1915, whereas Edward's arrival was delayed by a few months - he could have been sick when his battalion sailed, or he could have enlisted for home service with the territorials and later volunteered to go to the front).
He was, presumably wounded, injured or contracted an illness that reduced his fitness - probably in France.
All guesswork really, the medal rolls might show which battalion he served with in France, but may just show the Home Service battalion or the Gloucesters to whom he must have transferred in 1917/18 (presumably to more home service - closer to home).
