Where's Joseph Leech born?
« on: Sunday 09 December 12 12:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi all   ;D

I am on the hunt for Joseph Leech parish record, but am a bit confused on where he was actually born

He married in 1837 to Harriot Fisher  Reg District: Ecclesfield

In 1841 it says he was born abt 1818 in Yorkshire - living in Civil Parish  - Silkstone,  Reg District - Wortley

In 1851 he was born abt 1815 Wortley, now living Civil Parish -  Wombwell,  Reg District  - Barnsley

In 1861 born abt 1815 Unchllieffe,  now living Civil Parish - Wombwell,   Reg District - Barnsley

In 1871 born about 1815 Hunchill, Penistone, now living Civil Parish - Wombwell, Reg District - Barns;ey

in 1881 born abt 1815 Thiugoland, living Civil Parish - Darfield, Reg District Barnsley.

In 1891 born about 1814 Thurgoland, living Civil Parish  -Ardsley,  Reg District - Barnsley

How can one person change his place of birth on every census, are these places all near each other?  what Parish District is he likely to be born?

Any help appreciated  :)

Hi

In the 1841 Census, age were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years - so if he said he was  26, 27 28 or 29 then, he should have been rounded  down to 25.  It looks like the enumerator has simply taken 5 years off his stated age instead - this error was common, many enumerators misunderstood the rounding down procedure! Or ignored it.  The 1814-1815 indicated in the other 5 census is a more reliable indicator, I'd say.

GENUKI:
Parish of Silkstone, in which is Thurgoland
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Silkstone/more.html
In 1822 described as 4 miles ESE. of Penistone, 4½ from Barnsley, 9½ from Sheffield. Pop. 819

Parish of Penistone, in which is Hunchill & Hunchill Bank - actually Hunshelf & Hunshelf Bank
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Penistone/more.html
In 1822: Hunshelf  described as 3 miles SE. of Penistone, 7 from Barnsley, 10 from Sheffield. Pop. 436 and Hunshelf Bank described as  a hamlet in the township of Hunshelf, and parish of Penistone, 3½ miles SE. of Penistone."

So it looks as if in 1861 & 1871 he is stating the same place of birth.

For Wortley - the following is interesting:

I've always gone with the smallest place as the most likely, when faced with similar  multiple pobs - then run with it until it proves false or true!  I'm wondering. if he may have been born in Hunchill and christened in Wortley Chapel? There are a number of possibles on Family Search.

The father's name on the Dec Qtr 1837 marriage certificate would probably be very helpful!

Cheers
