Baptism of Children to John Longford and Hannah Cook/Cooke
« on: Sunday 09 December 12 03:31 GMT (UK) »
I have a marriage Bann for John Longford and Hannah Cook/Cooke in Kings Stanley, Gloucestershire, England dated 1 Feb 1824 .........They came out to South Australia and arrived in 1840 with their 7 children......children were listed sons born Thomas (abt 1826), George? (abt 1828), Charles (abt 1832), Unknown perhaps Frederick or John(abt 1840) daughters were Ann (abt 1829), Emma (abt 1831) and Unknown/perhaps Mary? (abt 1838)............I am finding it hard to locate the baptism and names of their children because of the gap between online information between 1812 and 1837........... :-X.....Gaynor50.................An extra note added they could have been born in Nailsworth, Stroud area of Gloucestershire.

Hi,
John LONGFORD m. Hannah COOK @ St George, Kings Stanley, February 1st, 1814, by Banns.
December 11th, 1825, Thomas, son of John & Hannah LONGFORD, a Shearman of Ebley, bap. @ St George, Kings Stanley.
November 11th, 1827, Charles, son of John & Hannah LONGFORD, a Shearman of Cuckles(?) Brook, Stroud, bap. @ St George, Kings Stanley.
That's all I could find, and the Longfords, baptised at St Lawrence, Stroud do NOT belong to John & Hannah.

:-*  Thank you for your efforts Victor...........I was wondering why the marriage didn't appear in the IGI with the date someone gave me of 1824 I will take a further look for the 1814 banns.  I was thinking that in the 1841 Census that Charles Longford who married Ann nee ? was perhaps John's brother he is listed Whitstone (Lower Division), Rodborough, Stroud..........Hannah Cook's sister Ann married Thomas Heaven 7 Jul 1822 in Kings Stanley also and I noticed Charles Longford had a son with the spelling of Steaven which i was going to have a look if it was a misspelling?............It seems to have been a mystery in Australia as to their origins but at least I am getting closer to an answer..............Gratefull to you and Merry Xmas......Gaynor... :)

Hi Gaynor,
I thought I'd stay on the case and decided to look at the children of Thomas & Ann HEAVEN. This threw up a conundrum, and it appears possible that there are 2 Thomas & Ann family groups due to the baptism dates of their children. Anyway, I list below the baptisms of the children of Thomas & Ann HEAVEN at St George, Kings Stanley, post-1822 followed by Thomas' occupation and residence.
29/06/1823, Robert HEAVEN, a slater & plasterer of Middle Yard
26/10/1823, Maria HEAVEN, a slater & Plasterer of Borough
15/05/1825, Sarah Ann HEAVEN, a slater & Plasterer of Middle Yard
20/11/1826, Esther HEAVEN, a plasterer of Middle Yard
10/12/1826, Charlotte HEAVEN, a plasterer of Middle Yard
28/09/1828, Henry Dawson HEAVEN, a plasterer of Brick Yard
25/01/1829, Mary Ann HEAVEN, a slater & plasterer of Middle Yard

Thank you Victor..............There is another Cook family member that will also appreciate your effort very much....It appears that John and Hannah's other children are very hard to locate where they went after Kings Stanley..............I mights just check a few other area's perhaps Wiltshire etc or perhaps London records before they left for South Australia........ :-\.....Apparently FYI Ann and Hannah Cook inherited money from an Uncle that didn't have any children so his brother (who died before him) mentioned his daughters to inherit some of his estate........ :D.....Thank you for you help....Gaynor

Hi Gaynor,
Whilst in Glos Archives (GA) today, I checked the baptism records of St George, Kings Stanley, 1814-1827 and there is NO trace of John & Hannah's earlier children.
I then went next door, to the Glos Family History Society (GFHS), to check their Glos Baptism Index 1813-1837. Still NO trace.
I can't make sense of it! My ONLY recommendation is to appoint a professional to try and locate the parish in which the earlier children were baptised, and would recommend the following:-

Hi Victor.............I originally thought that they may have perhaps gone to New Zealand, or Western Australia or perhaps Tasmania and then come to South Australia but there was nothing showing up in their records at all.....You have definitely helped in the elimination of any further children being located there but what a mystery that indeed as you say may need a researcher to locate this.............Above and beyond that call of duty thank you so much for your help........ :)  Gaynor

Hi Victor
Is it possible that the marriage for John Longford and Hannah Cooke could have been 1824 as in 1814 they would have only been young teenagers if their birth/baptism dates were around 1800/1802, I believe their first child Thomas was born around 1825, I would be most grateful for your help
Thank you
Joy

Joy, I believe you're correct. From the Glos FHS transcription I have the marriage was in 1824, otherwise as detailed by Victor.
