Agnes Shearer
« on: Saturday 08 December 12 23:45 GMT (UK) »
Agnes Shearer is my mother in law and the biggest mystery of our family.  She has two sisters Lizzie and Mary.  The problem was known as Shearer but her father's name was Russell. I have searched both surnames.  She never married.  I have searched thro her sister's as well.  She said she was born on 16/12/02 but her medical card said it was 6/12/02.  We thought she was born in Blantyre and later lived in Bathgate but I now think she was born elsewhere.  She lived in Wales during the war when my husband was a little lad.  She was 42/43 he was born in Penbrooke so he doesn't remember anything about his granny. He just seen her in hospital when he was a child. If I could be sure what her surname really was or did she change it because she was afraid of the father taking the her son. We just presumed the family name was Shearer.  Anybody got any ideas please.  Thank you if you even look at this. :) xxx

Hope you don't mind me asking questions -but I am a little confused by your post??

Your mother in law is Agnes Shearer??
Yet later you say she was 42/43 when your husband was born - so he doesn't remember anything about her only seeing his granny in hospital ? So who was his Granny????

Agnes Shearer's father's name was Russell????? Where did you get this from???

If you could just post details of the  birth cert you oredered - name -parents, mother's maiden name, p.o.b.

I cant see an Agnes Russell or an Agnes Shearer birth in Oct/NOv/Dec 1902 or Jan/Feb/Mar 1903 ...
at least in England or Wales. Where is Blantyre where you thought she was born?

Have you looked on 1911 for her / and / or sisters? We cant do look ups but there seems to be an Agnes Shearer bn Scotland living in Lancashire
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Sorry for confusing you. I mentioned the granny who was Agnes's mother because even my husband was too young to get her name, I don't think he had much contact with the family. I was trying to emphasise  how little we know.
The birth certificate says Agnes Russell was born on 12/12/02. Address 53 Cochrane St. Bathgate.
Agnes herself told me that her father's name was Russell, but she called herself Shearer. This birth certificate says the father's name is Alexander Russell and mother's Margaret Myres Married 16 November 1883.  It means they were married 19 years when Agnes was born.  Agnes told me her father used to go away and then comeback and another child would be born. She only ever mentioned Lizzie and Mary.
Thanks for pointing out the confusion I saw it when I read it again and also for taking an interest. :) xxx

Thank you lizdb.  I have looked up the sisters and tried to find out more about them. Agnes is an enigma, so I thought i could get some info on the family thro' them. I have just posted a birth certificate I ordered which I thought was her but I'm not so sure now.  We know she was Shearer when she was in Wales during the war where my husband was born but to get further back I'm trying to find which surname she used. Appreciate your help. Blantyre is in Scotland.  :) xxx

Do you know when and where she died? And in what name?

Had Agnes been married?

On her child's birth cert what is given as her maiden name??

I know where she died. It was in Belfast under Agnes Shearer, and that is the name on her son's birth certificate.  I lived in Belfast at that time and brought her from Scotland to me to look after her. She died 15/2/82.  But all that is no use to me.  She said she never  married, her son's father being the love of her life. We were able to contact the father and he knew her as Shearer as well.  I found an Agnes Shearer in 1901 Scottish Census and the name of her sisters were on it too. But it has her born 1895. In it the birthplace was stirling, then in1911 there was a move to Lanchashire.  On 1901 census there were other children and more born when they moved to England. We including her son thought there was just three sisters.
We were unable to find the marriage certificates of her two sisters maybe they were married in England. You can see why I appreciate help.

The name of the parents on this new finding are Robert and Annie Shearer. Robert born c1867 and Annie 1868.  Hope this isn't a red herring :) xxx
