Proctor and Langley surname connection
« on: Friday 07 December 12 23:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am wondering if anyone can help me. My great great grandmother was Mary Ann Langley born abt. 1852 died 1938 in South Australia as married name Mary Ann Fewster. There is some connection to the surname "Proctor", which I can't figure out. Her son was Garnet Proctor Langley Fewster, who died when he was 4 years old. I have looked at familyHistorySAinfo website and found there was a John Proctor and Ann Langley arriving with 2 sons in 1840 on the Charles Kerr from London. I had believed that Mary Ann was born in England, but now not so sure. Mary Ann married William Fewster after the death of his first wife, Ruth Richmond (is my understanding).

I am on ancestry.com and I have also looked at Trove as well as the website above.

I am wondering if anybody can suggest another website or another way to search for this information. I am not that good at utilising everything ancestry.com has to offer.

There is some connection here, I just can't put it together.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Daisycat,

According to the "Bound For South Australia" database, on board the same ship on the same voyage as the PROCTOR family were a William & Elizabeth LANGLEY?LONGLEY with two children, sons George and Richard. In bracket's Elizabeth's maiden name is given as HEPPLEWHITE with several question marks after it. They were cabin passengers.

Maybe William and Ann were brother and sister?

Again, that would suggest that Mary Ann was born in South Australia.   :-\

Thank you, all good information.

Mary Anns father was Edwin (or Edward) Langley and her mother was Mary Milk. Not a common name, yet I can't find anything.

First registered birth in SA in 1854 is for John in the Adelaide district with a further five births to 1865 in the Mt Barker district.  If this is the correct family, Mary Ann who was born c1853 according to her marriage registration, was born in South Australia.
