Coventry Burials (London Rd Cemetery)
« on: Thursday 06 December 12 20:24 GMT (UK) »
My 2 x Great Grand Uncle. John Gough (b1842) died in 1888 and was buried in London Rd Cemetery, Coventry sq114, plot115. He was buried along with six other deceased persons. I do not so far have a copy of his death certificate & was wondering if anyone had any clues as to why he would be buried with six non family members. I have looked on the net but so far have drawn a blank so does anyone know if there was an epidemic in Coventry at that time & who are the people that he was buried with?

Hi,
I can confirm that John GOUGH was buried in London Road Civic Cemetery on 31st May 1888, aged 46.
The only possible clue that I can offer, for a multiple burial plot, not being family, is that it was a pauper's burial.

I have a burial register on disc for London road cemetery 1847-1937.

The grave you stated was purchased by a John Looms and there are Looms buried in the same grave as Goughs.  Would you like the names and dates of burial of the other people buried there?

I do feel that the persons buried are all related in some way as there is a marriage transcribed on "Pickards pink pages for Warwickshire" at Holy Trinity church for John Gough aged 22 from Agnes Lane (father John Gough) marrying a Maria Looms in 1863 (father John Looms), the witnesses were William and Mary Ann Gough.

Hi Eric

The disc is only showing four other people buried with John Gough, his address was noted as Cook Street at the time of his burial (date as Victor stated above).

Ann Looms aged 44 address Spon End, buried 27/01/1858
William Henry Wood aged 15 months, Spon End buried 27/10/1866
Eliza Looms aged 34, 140 Spon St, buried 08/08/1870
Elizabeth Mary Gough aged 15 months, 39 Freeth Street buried 09/05/1894

If John was buried with six others the other two may have been buried after 1937.

24 Nov 1850   George GOUGH           4
7 Sep 1863     John GOUGH             60
13 Feb 1884    Ann  GOUGH             80

The above are buried together in square 135 Grave 73 the address at time of burial for all three was Agnes Lane/ St Agnes Lane

Hope the info is of some help to you

Hello Eric,
John GOUGH married Maria LOOMS 1863.
Maria’s mother Ann LOOMS nee HEWITT died January 1858, he sister Eliza died 1870.
Elizabeth Mary GOUGH appears to have been John’s granddaughter, the infant daughter of John James GOUGH and Catherine Mary WEST.
