TRacing unknown father Stockbridge Hampshire
« on: Thursday 06 December 12 10:40 GMT (UK) »
Good morning, I wonder if you folks can point me in the right direction? I have for sometime been tracing my roots and have come unstuck
My 2nd great grandmother Sarah Bather was born about 1817 in Over Wallop in Hampshire, married to THomas Davis in 1841. In 1851 she is shown widowed and in Stockbridge workhouse with four of her children.
My  direct descendant Henry was born in 1859 and obviously illegitimate must have been conceived whilst Sarah was at the workhouse in 1851(census) or  at
168 High St Stockbridge, Hampshire, England(1861) census as I don't know when she left the workhouse. I would like to find the unknown father(shown on Henry's birth cert)
I am pretty sure I am looking for a needle in a haystack but does anybody know the next steps I should take?
Thanking you in anticipation

Good morning

When you say the "unknown father (shown on Henry's birth cert)" do you mean there is a name shown on the birth cert - if so what is it?

There are 5 Davis children with her in the workhouse in 1851 - Elizabeth 9 Harriet 8 John 7 Thomas 5 Phoebe 2.

Right thanks.

Presume he got married if you are descended from him!  Do you have his marriage certificate to see if that names a father?

Hi Millie

Sarah Davis(nee Bather) married THomas Davis in 1841, he died she ended up in the workhouse shown on 1851 census then during that period Henry was born 1859, there are no records to show that Sarah re-married

Hi
Hampshire records office http://www3.hants.gov.uk/archives may have some of the records for the workhouse.
Presumably if she fell pregnant whilst there there would have been a fuss made as this was another mouth to be fed by the parish.......
