*COMPLETED*Finding Porter St. Liverpool in the 1841 Census
« on: Wednesday 05 December 12 13:48 GMT (UK) »
Advice needed please!  The marriage between John MEALEY and Alice BRANAGAN occurred on November 30, 1840 at St. Nicholas church in Liverpool.  The address that John MEALEY provided was for "Porter Street" and his father John MEALEY is listed as a "baker".  In the 1841 census the newly weds are living on Chisenhal St. 74 Mary Court but I am unable to firmly locate father John MEALEY or any other family member in the 1841 census, I thought I would try to locate "Porter Street" and view who lives there, but how to go about finding the street within the census is a mystery to me.  Is the only option going through all districts and enumerations until I happen upon "Porter Street"?
Any suggestions would certainly be welcome.
Renee

Thank you so much for the information.  I just finished looking through District 37 with no luck.  Perhaps my hunch was wrong, but I find it difficult to believe that John MEALEY came to England from Ireland on his own without a family member in tow, especially since the 1851 census they all lived near one another and worked in the same trade, but wonders never cease, right?

I think I've managed to find John (junior) in 1851 entered in the census as John Meily (HO109 / 2177/ 308/60)  :-\
But I can't seem to find John senior in 1851. Please can you give the reference, or say how old he is and what family members are with him?

I see that in 1841 John junior is entered as John Meila.

You are so kind!!!  I have found Laurence (B:1811 D: 1872) with his wife Alice (B:1811 D:1852) who married in Dublin Dec. 14, 1837 at St. Andrew's in the 1851 census living at 4 Evans Place, occupation coach driver.  Thomas (B:1813 D:1881) is shown as a 'visitor', occupation car proprietor living at 4 Keglut (?) St. H.O.107/2177. Thomas marries Elizabeth Magher in 1851 (haven't been able to find documentation of this).  The brothers John, Thomas, and Laurance are all car proprietor's/cab drivers and their elder sister Marcella Margaret (B:1808 D:1899?) doesn't show up until 1861 as Marcella Mahoney abode 3 Kirkdale Rd. but haven't been able to find her husband John Mahoney who apparently married in Sept 1848.  As far as John Sr. who is the baker, unfortunately I do not know any dates for him, the major entries for him are the notations on marriage banns in Nov. 1840 and August 13, 1854 which have his occupation listed as "baker".
Thank you for your interest and effort.
Cheers,
Renee

You won't find Laurence in the 1841 England census - his son Richard was born in Ireland c. 1843, according to the 1851 census
