Deptford Non-Conformist Churches - Charles EAST
« on: Tuesday 04 December 12 05:30 GMT (UK) »
I have been searching for the birth of my GGGrandfather Charles EAST for some decades without luck. He was a sailor who jumped ship in Melbourne in 1853 to make his fortune in the gold rush but all he got was lung disease and an early death.

Earlier this year his seaman'a records went online and they gave his dob as 4 Jul 1822 in Deptford. When he married in Melbourne in 1854 his parents were recorded as William EAST, printer and Sarah BARROWCLIFF.

I have searched all the online PR's and indexes for Deptford and surrounds but have not located his baptism. The familysearch catalogue indicates that there were quite a few non-conformist churches operating in Deptford at the time.

Before I start ordering the films one by one, I'm hoping that some kind rootschatter may have a transcript of any of the following chapels and can do a look-up for me.

Deptford Congregational
New Cross Chapel
Independent Church High Street
Independent Church Medway Place, Bury St, St Mary Axe
Wesleyan High Street
Church Street Chapel Baptists
Ebenezer Chapel King Street
Jireh Chapel Victory Street.

Thank you

I have digging deeper into non-conformity in Deptford and found that many of the records are already on familysearch. I have checked the batches and am now only missing the records for:

Deptford Congregational
Church St Chapel Baptists

if anybody can help with transcripts.

Thank you

The marriage of Thomas East and Sarah Barracliff has intrigued me for quite some time jcred, especially since his occupation was recorded as 'calico printer' in the Deptford PR when son George was baptised.

Heaven forbid that the Melbourne PR be wrong, that could never happen could it! LOL  >:( >:(

In 1822 what later came to be Deptford Congregational Church was still BUTT LANE Independent.

In abt 1827 Butt Lane was renamed High Street which is why the name of the Church then changed.

A lot of the Butt Lane records are on Familysearch, but I cannot see anything for Charles.

Thanks Bill for the info on Deptford Congregational, it looks like I can can cross that one off the list.

I see that you have a special interest in Deptford local history. Do you know anything about the Baptist Chapel in Church street?

Cheers, Darryl

No, it is very obscure.

I know where it was, but it has never come up in any of the local families or local history that I have researched

Interestingly there are my ancestors who were all married and baptised at St Dunstans commencing with a marriage on 23 Nov 1607 then several children baptised at St Dunstans until one child born 1836 he married in 1659 at Bull lane Independent House which I assume would be a private dwelling.
I think that this site describes it but I have found no more;
