English version of Swedish names

I am researching a John Lawrence Johnson born in Sweden about 1848..I  guess that Johann or Johansen may have been Swedish but what could  Lawrence have originally  been? He was my wife's great-grandfather..Seems to be two different fellers with same name..I do know that the 1901 entry for Matching,Essex is correct one.

Perhaps Larssen, or more likely Larenson/Laurenson?

Woops, I didn't read the question properly. You are looking for a given name, so I guess Laurens is the best fit.

  Many surnames In Shetland were not fixed until the 19th? century. A John Lawrenson's son might be Magnus Johnson for example. Whether this was the case in Sweden I don't know but it's something to keep in mind.

I would have thought the most likely would have been
Johan Laurens Johansen .......
do you know when he came into the country ?   sometimes The Times Archives has notices for Aliens applying for Naturalisation ....if you are lucky ,he may have placed a notice - especially if he lived in London

John: could be Jon, Jøns or Johan, maybe Johannes...

Johnson: Jonsson, jønsson or Johansson

No easy task, I think you need some more details Than trying to convert the name

Thanks people..I have a question..To become a British subject would it have been compulsory to do so with an engilsh version of their name?

OK Mike..So name irrelevant..Would there be a minimum age requirement such as 21?  As he was only a seaman I doubt that any announcement would be made in the press..
