LancsBMD registration district - COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 02 December 12 18:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi,  On Lancashire BMD I've seen a death registration for Margaret Appleton in 1879.  It shows 'Registers at Preston' with the 'Sub District' of Lathom, but isn't Lathom near Skelmersdale? (which would fit with the 1871 census and where her husband is in 1881).  Kit

I would read that as you can obtain the record from Preston - If you try ordering the certificate from this site the form produced for that record  gives a Preston address to send it to.

Yes, Lathom is near Skelmersdale, but the place where the register is kept, and where you can apply to for a copy of the register entry, is in Preston.

Clicking on the reference number will lead you to a postal application form with the address.

However, I notice that the office in Preston charges £10 for a certificate (and they want a sae) whereas the GRO office, if you apply online, will only charge £9.25

Makes sense.  On FreeBMD the Registration District is Ormskirk which is more like it.  Many thanks, Kit

Hi Kit, Lathom is in the Ormskirk district, and indeed near to Skemersdale.

The registers held at Preston are the original ones, those from the GRO are copies, which is why there are sometimes slight differences, depending on the transcriber and how they read the original writing.

Galium is correct, the certs are £10 each, as they are from all local certificates offices.

Hi Lal, when I looked on Street View it looked like it might have been a small village but you think it covered a bigger area?  I know that in the 1881c her husband had re-married and was living in School Lane, Skelmersdale.  It would be interesting to look at maps of the area from that time.  Kit

Thanks very much Radcliff, they aren't my direct relatives so I don't expect that I'd spend a lot of money on Certs.  The information is much appreciated.  Kit
