William Allison 1802
« on: Sunday 02 December 12 09:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

Was wondering if anyone could help me with tracking down any further details about a William Allison from Middlesex (Southgate).  William is my great, great, great grandfather.

According to the 1851 census, he is listed as being born in Southgate, Middlesex, 49 years of age, a pump maker who has a deafness disability. He was married to a Mary who lists herself as being born in Ampthill, Bedfordshire (dates on Ancestry vary between 1808 and 1812) They have  children - William, James, Ann and John (born Finchley 1846 - my great, great grandfather).

In the 1861 census, Mary is listed as widowed and 53 years of age.
In the 1841 Census, William and Mary are listed as 35 and 30 years old respectively with the following children: Susan 10, William 8, James 5 and Ann 1.

I am looking for any further info on William - parents name, Mary's maiden name etc - anything!!!! It is possible that Williams father was Joseph and mother Mary Nelson (a baptism certificate from Southgate area which I saw on Ancestry). Mary could have been Mary Lyne. There are also conflicting dates on Ancestry for Williams date of birth - 1801, 1806 and 1802 but 1802 looks more likely.

If anyone could help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it :) I have an Ancestry UK Heritage Plus membership but am having no luck going any further back than William but I am fairly new to this so I may have missed something along the line.

Thanks for reading  :)
Craig

Think this is a classic case of 'one step at a time' here.

You need to purchase a copy of your gt. gt. grandfather John's birth certiticate to establish his mother's maiden name which may or may not be Lyne.

There is a couple named Thomas and Sarah Line having children in Ampthill but the only Mary was b.1801.   They are the only Line/Lyne's in Ampthill at that time.

My only concern would be that at a time when famiy names used over and over again William and Mary did not include names of his parents for their children, nor hers (if she is connected to the Line family in Ampthill).

Your first step needs to be the purchase of John's birth certificate to firmly establish mother's maiden name.

William Allison was buried 24/7/1856 Finchley St Mary aged 50.   This would tie in with his baptism at Southgate on 1/9/1805.

Hi Annette7

Thanks for your reply and input - much appreciated  :)

I will go about ordering John's birth certificate and see what that shows.

Quick question: Is the best place to order those certificates directly through the Ancestry website or should I be going to another site to order?

Regards

Craig
